Description
What is an EPROM?
An EPROM is a memory chip inside your engine controller unit (ECU) which stores the fuel and ignition look up tables which tell the ECU how much fuel to inject and which ignition advance to run at dependant on the load/speed of the engine.
Whats chipping?
Chipping is replacing the EPROM with a new one which has altered fuel and ignition tables to give higher performance out of the engine, the car manufacturer originally wanted a good balance between economy and engine life (they have to take into account people that rarely service engines etc..) so the maps shipped out with the car are a compromise.
Is there any difference between EPROMs?
Yes, EPROMs have a speed rating which is how long it takes for the data requested by the ECU to be provided, this is rated in nanoseconds. The quicker the EPROM, the faster the ECU can get the data, the smoother the engine should run. Ideally you want the quickest EPROM speeds you can find. We use 40ns access EPROMs, the original one used in the ECU was at 4x slower than this (120ns).
Will I need any special tools?
You'll need to desolder the existing EPROM from your ECU and resolder in a DIL chip carry socket (provided with all our EPROMs). Full instructions will be provided. Alternatively we do offer an installation service where you can ship us the complete ECU and for a modest fee we will desolder and install a DIL chip carry socket for you and ship the ECU back. We have all the correct SMT rework tools as an electronics assembly business, so you can assured your ECU will be opened and worked on in a clean anti-static environment.
My EPROM is already chipped but is slower, can you read it in and burn it to a faster EPROM?
Certainly! If you send us your originally EPROM we will read it in and write it out for you onto one of our faster access EPROMs.
How much does it cost?
£30.00 per EPROM + postage and packing, for RetroRenault subscribers you'll get a massive £5.00 off per EPROM.
