I am the owner of a 1967 Renault 16 GL, which I wish to sell and I am looking for somebody fond of old cars. The car is all original and it works very well. ALSACE 2011 from 0
For the Renault 16 enthusiasts, here is a brief history of my car:
I am one of the proud owners of a Renault 16, a true wonder car. Unfortunately, in spite of all the passion that I have for this car, I wish to sell it, but not to anybody! In order to feel contempt with this choice, I will only entrust it to a passionate person, who will take good care of it, so that I know "it is in good hands". The car is a Renault 16 Grande Luxe manufactured in 1967, 1647 cc engine, model 697 and a 5 gear manual gearbox. It has been in my possession since 1995 and I am the third owner. The first owner took really good care of the car, keeping it mostly in the garage, but he also drove it around. During Ceausescu's rule in the communist period, he drove it as far as Barcelona in Spain, Napoli in Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, almost through the entire Europe. The second owner, a young person who kept it for about one year, destroyed its engine, because he did not change the oil in time.
I bought this car with the intention to restore it with original new parts and I succeeded! Here is a short story of the restoration process, in chronological order:
- 1997: I rebuilt the engine; I took the cylinder cover to the "Camionul" factory in Brașov, where the valve guides were replaced, the valves themselves were replaced with brand new original ones from France, re-bored the valve guides and supports, rectified the smoothness of the cylinder cover. (I usually do all the work by myself, but assembling the valve guides requires cooling in liquid nitrogen, which exceeded my possibilities). I also changed other worn parts with brand new ones, taken out of sealed boxes: BORGO engine kit, with APEX segments, cam shaft and DELCO drive pinion, big and small distribution pinion, distribution chain, chain restrainer, crankshaft with STD quote, BORGO piston bearings, crankpins and base bearing with STD quote, pressure bearing, pressure plate, VERTO clutch plate, oil pump, MARCHAL gas pump, water pump. I installed temperature, water and oil pressure probes in the cylinder cover, which I linked to analogue dials on the dashboard. I also hooked up the revolution meter on the dashboard.
- 2000: I changed the back end shock absorbers with brand new French originals, brand DE CARBON, with gas (double effect), and brand new Belgian ones on the front. I changed the water radiator with a brand new brass one. I also changed the locks on the doors and on the trunk.
- 2001: The car has been isolated and painted in metallic red (in the oven). Even if it wasn't required (but I had new parts at my disposal), I changed the front and right back doors, weather-strips and fittings for the windows. I changed the hand break cable and the bearings on all wheels. The car's body did not show any traces of rust and it was never damaged. The longerons and shoulders have been filled with 12 litres of valve oil each year and the doors have been greased with petrolatum on the interior.
- 2002: I changed the gearbox with a second hand one taken out of a car with few miles on board that was involved in a collision. The 5 gear gearbox belonged to a Renault 16-TX 1974. I also changed the drive shafts with WEISS brand new originals.
- 2003: I changed the brake disks with brand new French originals. I also changed the wind shield with a brand new one, because the one that came with the car got shattered by surface dressing chippings from the road.
- 2005: I changed the exhaust silencer with an original one and I rebuilt the exhaust pipe that links the engine and the silencer and the end segment of the exhaust from stainless steel welded together with argon.
Best regards,
Horea Bendea
