5 GT Turbo fitting clutch

Mark Davis

Brapmaster extraordinaire
Is there any how to guides about for swapping out clutch ? Also is it worth doing anything else whilst fitting ?
Currently not sure if to attempt the clutch change myself or get someone else to do it.

I prefer engine and gearbox out, then split ........ takes a good day on your own.... Don't forget to remove the gear selector arm from the gearbox before the engines lifted by a hoist , 2 x 13 mm spanner's....

Worth doing yourself, handy skill, .... :) if you like quarter mile starts from the lights the valeo Volvo clutch kit from GSF is a quality piece of kit for £60 .... And able to take up to 230 bhp....

Happy days.....

The moment you call Helix direct they tell you to go and talk to one of their UK distributors as they do not sell direct. Thats where the issues start as every single disti is a load of shite.

I know the GM at Awesome GTi, they're a dealer. Lemme know if you need anything from there again.

Helix had to customer-serve the hell out of me when I turned up on their doorstep :D lol

Thanks Dave, good to know for the future. I just couldn't believe how so many companies were unwilling to take my money. Very frustrating.
Absolutely ridiculous isn't it. Can't give your money away sometimes. I told them in no uncertain terms when I was there that their dealer network sucked ass and they must be losing business hand over fist to people who just give up.

Finally after many months the 5 is booked in to have clutch and flywheel fitted plus the later GTT steering rack.
What would you guys expect to pay in terms of labour for clutch 4-6hrs sound about right? They did a rack for me before in 2hrs so thats not too bad.

@Brigsy @andybond @DaveL485

@Adey

Cheers

Cool, cheers Andy.

I've seen a few people claim 5-6 hrs by taking the whole engine out and then changing. They are a good local motorsport garage and have worked on many 5s in the past. But yeah if its a full 8hrs then so be it. Will be good to finally get it sorted.

With a ramp and air tools, i'd be asking why if it took longer than six, but in a nice way not a "you ripped me off" way. I can do a clutch on a 5/9/11/21 Turbo or a 172 in that, on the floor/axle stands.

Yeah dropped it off this morning mate. Clutch/flywheel, lower speedo cable, lower steering column and steering rack.

Will hopefully have it back in a few days.
