Folk Regularly Ask me "How do I make a Good Investment in a Potential Classic Car?"
I Reply ... As a Guy who has Scrapped 6 MK1 Astra GTE's , Owned and Sold 7 R5 GT Turbos for Peanuts and Written off One of the Rarest RS Turbo Lightenings , Sold my 3-Dr Cossie for £2250 and Several Forbie Cossies for Parts ... You should Really Ask Someone Else !
Yeah But you've got a Few nice cars in your Collection that have made Thousands !
Have They really ?
I've put enough , time , effort and V-Max Petrol in my V6 that i wil Never make Money ! I didn't buy it for that reason , I bought it out of Love for the V6 ; for the Madness and Uniquness .... I was So lucky to find such an Awesome Car , but as i have said many a time , the Phase 1 originals will always sky rocket in value ... Way Beyond the PHase II's the Only Reason the R5 Turbo2 Didn't Sell at the Silverstone Auctions Recently is because the Reserve was set at 1/4 of a Million Pounds !!
Clio V6 Prices have Sky-Rocketed since my last post and my Accurate Prediction :-)

So , If you would like a Vehicle to Invest in , That is Cool , Rare and will Always Increase in Value ...
You will Always need a Fast Ford :-)
I Have Just Purchased a Ford Mondeo in the Ultra-Rare Diamond Black Metallic as Opposed to the Still Quite Rare "Panther Black" Cars
With Full Black Leather Recaro Trim , Colour Sat Nav , Reverse Sensors , Outside and Inside Courtesy Lights , Heated Seats , Factory Upgraded 18" RS Alloys Etc.
The Spec is Enormous ! ... This was a Bargain at £30,000 New as it has German Build Quality , A Super Smooth 3.0 Litre V6 Engine that Does Roar at the Red-Line , Has More BHP than an Escort Cosworth or Sierra ....
Need I Go On ?
As the English Built ST24 (The Quality of the Steel as Opposed to the Build Quality ... Remember the MK3 German and then the Mk4 English Fast Escorts ?) The Older ST24 and ST200 have plumeted in Value in Respect ONLY of the ST220's Available Today ... Seen this before when the White Lightenings were the same price as the RS2000 at about £2k ! Goodnes I am Gettting Old !
The ST220 is a Very Rare Car ... Mine sits next to the Exec's Merc worth 30.000 on the Forecourt and You can't tell them Apart ... In Fact , the 2005 St220 has far Higher Spec !
Many Customers have said "Love the new Merc but the Ford (With the Private Plate) Looks the Same ... I prefer the Ford ST :-)
A Couple of the Low Mileage Panthers are for Sale at £8,000 and a Moderate Mileage Panther at £6,000
My Diamond Black has Exceeded £100k but with Excellent History ...
Just needs buying and Sticking in a Barn for Ten Years at Only £1750 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
12 Months MOT with No Advisories
Couple of Minor Niggles like I've Boshed the Gorgeous Alloys Real Good and I've Knocked a small piece out of the front bumper ( Still have it - Just requires Plastic Welding )
If You can Stomach the 25 MPG , What an INCREDIBLE Every Day Car ( 40 MPG on Motorways )
Or a PERFECT INVESTMANT

I think the 'return on investment' on older cars in recent years has been phenomenal... to the point that it has become daft!

Cars are technology, old technology is crap - ergo: old cars are crap.

Try driving a 205 Gti today - it's agricultural! Try owning a Delta Integrale - their toffee components break too easily! These are selling for fabulous money.

What's fuelling this whole debacle is old dudes chasing their childhood dreams. Eg I had a countach poster on my wall and could be in a position to buy one now.

IMO certain cars got under our skin - fast fords (rs200, rs500, cossies) were featured regularly on our limited channel tv. These particular cars always have been sought-after because of this. They got under our skin.

I'm not so sure that any Mondeo ever made that connection...

The Renault Clio V6 Renault Sport has a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. It is so impractical that I doubt we will see the likes again. So whilst it is becoming 'old hat', it also remains very much unique. It won't be surpassed by new technology as this is unlikely to occur.
It's future as a classic is assured.

I'm abit of a fan of the modern classic at the minute. 10 year old cars are easy to live with & have plenty of room for investment potential.

I made a list of a few realistic investment propositions 5 years ago & all have increased in value.

Mk1 Focus RS
E46 M3 CSL
Clio V6
Z3m coupe

I would now add to the list

Mk1 mini gp works
182 trophy
996 C4S

All relatively affordable, great to own & guaranteed not to lose u any money.

Just need to convince Amanda we can justify a V6 & C4S now lol

Hmmm....Not sure a warmish, pepped up saloon that otherwise sold by the millions will be much of an investment but more stupid things have ended up being worth a mint! Although I'm not a huge Ford fan I do like the classics (albeit with out the stupid chrome many owners insistis on throwing in under the bonnet). I always look at the Granada and ST24 as try hard Cosworth wanna be's. Way out shadowed by the the Sierra and Escorts it always in a soft way tried to be. Its exactly the same as the Focus ST and RS. The ST will always be classed as a normal, warmed up Focus. The RS on the other hand will be worth the extra. Its also worth remembering that in that period, there were many much hotter more desirable saloons. Volvo kicked away the old man image and bought out the 850R which is a rare car, well built, fettled by TWR and bloody quick. When it came to the German Saloons they were waaaay better. Audi had a similarly priced B5 S4 which had the epic 2.7t engine and awd. You could also get a Cosworth fettled one in the shape of the RS4 but that commanded much more money as it still does today.
Buying a cheap classic, storing it and hoping its worth a mint in the future is a big gamble. I dry stored a 50 year old classic for 10 year and it cost me quite a sum to do so. Way more than the £3k I originally paid for it. I'm just extremely lucky that its now worth 10-15 times that. That had the help of it being an original early car, an Iconic following and some quite interesting history. There needs to be some key ingredients to make an investment car I reckon.
