F8Q 1.9 DIESEL HEAD GASKET ISSUES

HI FOLKS!

JUST CHANGED THE HEAD GASKET ON MY R21 SAVANNA 1.9 OIL BURNER AND HAVE A BIT OF PROBLEM:roll:

THE REASON I CHANGED THE HEAD GASKET IN THE FIRST PLACE WAS DUE TO THE COOLING SYSTEM PRESSURISING BEYOND BELEIF (TO THE EXTENT IT ACTUALLY CRACKED THE EXPANSION TANK) AND OIL POURING OUT FROM BETWEEN THE HEAD AND BLOCK JUST ABOVE THE GEARBOX FLANGE.

I DID THE HEAD GASKET ON SATURDAY WITH NO PROBS WHATSOEVER, ALL WENT WELL AND CONSIDERING THE MILEAGE (186000 MILES) WAS AMAZED THAT THE BORES STILL HAVE THE ORIGIONAL HONING MARKS ON THEM AND A VERY MINIMAL LIP ON THE TOP:)

THE HEAD WAS SHOCKINGLY NOT WARPED AND WAS WELL WITHIN TOLERENCE AND CLEANED UP LIKE BRAND NEW.

I PUT IT ALL BACK TOGETHER BY THE BOOK WITH A DECENT FAI HEAD GASKET OF THE CORRECT THICKNESS AND I DO KNOW WHAT I AM DOING, FITTED A SECOND HAND EXPANSION TANK AND RAN IT UP WITH NO PROBS WHATSOEVER. ITS RUNNING LIKE CLOCKWORK, REALLY LOVELLY.

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I NOW HAVE AN OIL LEAK FROM No: 10 HEAD BOLT (THE ONE ON THE FRONT NEARSIDE OF THE ENGINE NEXT TO THE VACUUM PUMP. OIL IS SEEPING OUT FROM UNDER THE HEAD OF THE BOLT NOW THAT I HAVE DONE A COUPLE OF HUNDRED MILES.

I JUST WONDERED IF ANYONE KNOWS IF THIS IS A COMMON FAULT WITH THESE ENGINES AND SHOULD I HAVE PUT SEALANT ON THE BOLT THREADS OR SOMETHING OR DOES IT SOUND LIKE I HAVE CRACKED AN OILWAY OR SOMETHING?

ITS NOT COMING OUT IN GUSHES OR ANYTHING TOO SERIOUS ALTHOUGH IT IS A NASTY LEAK, ITS JUST MORE ANNOYING THAN ANYTHING ELSE.

ANY IDEAS PLEASE?????????????

THANKS

NIGE.

firstly this whole honing marks thing i have yet to see an engine without honing marks still visible and I rebuild truck engines with well over a million miles on them.

Anyway, ,sounds like you either never cleaned the deck face properly or the dowel is damaged and holding the head up slightly

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE THE SAME JOB AS ME THEN! I AM A MECHANIC FOR AN IVECO MAIN DEALER! EVERY ENGINE IS DIFFERENT WHEN YOU STRIP IT AS I AM SURE YOU WILL KNOW DEPENDING ON DRIVING CONDITIONS, LOADS IMPOSED, FUEL QUALITY, OIL QUALITY, SERVICE INTERVALS ETC ETC ETC...........

THE BLOCK FACE AND HEAD FACE WERE CLEANED UP PERFECT USING A SCRAPER, GASKET DISOLVER AND THEN 1500 WET AND DRY SAND PAPER FOLLOWED BY A WIPE OVER WITH THINNERS WHICH WAS ALLOWED TO FULLY EVAPORATE.

THE DOWELS WERE BRAND NEW ONES THAT CAME WITH THE HEAD GASKET AND A NICE SNUG FIT.

ALL THE BOLT HOLES WERE CLEANED OUT WITH RAG AND A SCREW DRIVER THEN A TAP RUN DOWN THEM AND CLEANED OUT AGAIN TO REMOVE ANY SWARF.

IF I REMEMBER RIGHTLY THERE IS NOT A DOWL ON THIS HEAD BOLT ITS ON THE FRONT ONE ON THE OPPOSITE END AND THE REAR ONE ON THE FLYWHEEL END.

ivecos are awfull fiat buy out made them worse. still the new style bushes for the spring eyes etc are better. the smaller ones are tolerable the ones that share the engien with the renaults etc are not to bad to work on.

you sure the dowels not where your talking about often you need to grind down the dowels to get the head flush, people forget when the head etc is refaced the dowels need done the same amount a lot of the time.

did you check bolt length?

YOUR RIGHT IVECO'S ARE SHITE ITALIAN FIAT CRAP BUT THATS WHY I AM STILL IN A JOB LOL! CURSOR ENGINES (HALF IVECO HALF CUMMINS) AINT TOO BAD I SPOSE. DONT REALLY MESS WITH THE LITTLE DAILY'S WHAT RENAULT USED TO USE THE ENGINE OUT OF FOR THE MASTERS ETC AS I DO THE BIG STUFF MAINLY.

HEAD BOLTS ARE THE OLD 10mm ALLEN KEY TYPE SO NOT STRETCH BOLTS BUT I DID ACTUALLY MEASURE THEM CAUSE I THOUGHT IT APPLIED TO TORX AND ALLEN BOLTS AND THEY WERE WITHIN THE LIMIT BY MILES.

AS I SAY DOWELS WERE BRAND NEW AND I AM SURE THEY WERE ON THE HOLES I SAID AND NOT ON THE ONE THATS LEAKING.

I KNOW ON ONE OF THE OLD MAGGY DEUTZ ENGINES YOU USED TO HAVE TO PUT SEALANT AROUNT THE THREAD ON THE ONE HEAD STUD ON THE BACK HEAD CAUSE OF A SIMALAR PROBLEM AND JUST WONDERED IF THIS ENGINE HAD A SIMALAR THING?

nope no sealant etc needed on these, you tried nipping the bolt up again? Its not clamping right anyway.

The bigger iveco stuff is what I normally work on, the wee ones I was just saying ain't to bad.

The 7 tonners with the 4 pot NA engines, they are so slow its not even funny. The spanner on the cab latch tro get em to start when tilted as the button never works.

I prefer working on the bigger stuff like the volvo fh12's, scanias, renault premiums/magnums etc etc.

Dafs are another crap brand, like the ivecos they aren't really built to last.

VERY TRUE LOL! DID MY TRAINING ON THE OLD FORD STUFF, TRANSCONTINENTALS, OLD CARGO, D SERIES ETC THEN THE PLACE I WORK FOR CARRIED ON WHEN IVECO CAME IN AND NOW ARE IVECO, SHEDDON SHATKINSON, AND FIAT DEALERS SO I AM ON A NO HOPER LMAO! LEAST WE GOT PLENTY OF WORK DUE TO THE EXCELLENT BUILD QUALITY:)

NOT HAD CHANCE YET BUT AM GONNA RY JUST NIPPING THE BOLT UP A BIT MORE TO SEE IF IT CURES IT. IF IT DONT I WILL JUST HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IT FOR A BIT.

THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AS SWEET AS A NUT WITH PLENTY OF COMPRESSION, GOOD OIL PRESSURE AND NO COOLANT PROBLEMS SO I MAY JUST SAY SOD IT AND JUST KEEP AN EYE ON IT.

ONLY THING I CAN THINK IS THE SEALENT THAT GOES ROUND THE OIL GALLERY AND BOLT HOLE ON THAT PART OF THE HEAD GASKET MAY HAVE BEEN A LITTLE BIT ON THE HARD SIDE OR SOMETHING AND ITS NOT SEALED PROPERLY BETWEEN THE 2.

GOD KNOWS.

Please, don't write in CAPS. It's is really annoying to read, and people get impression as if You're shouting at them ;) (y)

It might make a nice coffee table but I got a Jag V12 block as one of them lol:)

Sorry for writing in capitals I just thought it made it clearer for people to read.

If I had the longitudinal engine set up I would have fitted a 2.8 daily / master setup ages ago.

Seriously considering fitting a 1.9 turbo diesel lump out of a meganne or laguna though when funds allow. Only probs I can see me having are fabricating an exhaust and sorting out the immobiiser on the injection pump.

Think I have sorted the oil leak now. Tightened the bolt another 45 degrees and been on a 60 mile run and no sign of any leak so fingers crossed:) Still considering that 1.9 turbo conversion though when funds allow. Anyone know if I can just unbolt the immobiliser unit off the injection pump on a later engine or bypass it somehow? Am I right in saying it just controlls the stop solenoid?
