Exhausting problems

Can anyone help? I have recently purchased some decats for the vee. However iv been told a few different stories. I know the engine mangement light will come on when i take the cats off. I have been told that the ecu recongises the cats missing hence the warning light on and puts the car into a "limp" mode, restricting the car. Is this true? If so is there anyway of getting around this without going to a new ecu like motech. Would a superchip cure the ecu problem?
Any help would be great.

Can anyone help Steve? Sorry mate, I'm stumped! I always removed the cats on my previous 1600 16v mk2 and clio cup with no hassle and no warning lights coming on either so I'm not sure.
