19 Exhaust spring compression

Hi all,

Need a bit of help. Had an exhaust leak so took the downpipe off from the manifold.

Found a 2nd hand manifold in a scrapyard. Bought new springs and bolts. When going to put it all back the springs are too long. The old springs are slightly shorter (I assume as they have been compressed over the years).

So the question is, how the dickens do I compress the springs enough to get them onto the bolt so I can get the nut on?

Thanks in advance

OK, so if I go back a bit.....the car has been off the road since 2013. Fixed a few things including the brakes, took it to inspection and it failed on exhaust emissions. Was about 3 times over the limit. There has been an audiable noise from around the mainfold sounding like an exhaust leak. My theory is that as not all the exhaust gasses were passing through the catalytic convertor / lambda sensor it was over fueling.

Looked over the mainfold and saw it was held on by a nut and bolt the wrong way round

Took it all off and was greeted by this - you can see the soot on side where it has been leaking.

Ordered some new things like the donut gasket, spring and nuts. Went to put everything back together and realised that:

1 whoever was fiddling around with the exhaust had drilled the previous stud out i.e. there is no thread or any way to attach an orginal stud
2 It will be very hard to get the springs back on.

I have bought a threaded metal rod which I am planning to cut to size for the hole that has no thread and then try to bodge it back on with some nuts. Then I have the remaining stud. I am pretty sure that after 30 years it won't come out without a fight.

The old springs are somewhat smaller than the new but I guess it will be hard to get the right tension on both sides.
