Exhaust Info

Guys (and gals) any info on this would be most appreciated. I'm thinking that for the summer i'd like to get a new exhaust, mainly just for a bigger and better sound. Here's the thing, i ain't too technically minded so whats the difference between just buying a back box or going for a whole system?
If i was to go just for a backbox what would this do interms of sound? I'm not really looking for any performance gains, just want to enhance the sound. Don't think i'd go down the Quicksilver route as find the car is alreayd loud enough on the motorway anyway so wouldn't want that on any longer journeys.

Any help or info much appreciated and on this if anyonce can recommend a decent system - either full or just backbox - would be great.

thanks in advance.

Hi there!

I don't think it's the good idea to buy a complete system as it will fail the MOT I guess (if it's like France). And I don't think you should buy a backbox if you find the original exhaust loud!

I purchased the QUicksilver Sport and it's quite a good compromise (correct?) but I find it a bit loud when you drive at 90/110 km/h.

thank you, might look at the Janspeed then. Will a back box still give a good sound etc then..? What is the difference then in going for a full system and paying 3x as much than for just a back box?

the full system allows the thing to breath and will increase (minorly) power. you can buy with or without cats. the full system sounds great, proper rally style pops and bangs.

just the backbox will result in negligble power gains, but lots more noise than standard!

I think the best idea is to see/hear other peoples and make a call on what you think you can put up with.

the quicksilver sport version seems to be a popular one and looks great. Dont go for the supersport if you find it too boomy already!!

I like the janspeed/k-tec ones myself as they are not so boomy in the cabin but give a nice sound out the back.

I've got the Quicksilver Supersport and it is VERY NOISY! Long motorway trips are abit of a nightmare mate. Had the KTEC and it was too quiet on my phase 1.

Best bet is too have a ride in one at a meet.

Matt.

Ideally i would really like one the pops and cackles on the overrun. Whats the difference between Janspeed at £280 ish + VAT and the K-Tec one at £475+VAT. Are there any other makes for a backbox that people would suggest?

Thanks

Orbisound exhausts - but they are megamoney mate.

There isnt that much difference between the Janspeed and K-Tec "allegedly"

I love sound in all conditions and it does pop crackle as well. Plus you can upgrade easily to a sports cat system with Janspeed i.e. buy the backbox now and sports cats were about 650 from memory.

I'd say go for the Janspeed "back box". Bill Patchall (simon) has one and it sounds great but doesnt give any boom. Its not quite as vocal as the Quicksilver but unless you want a supercar/race car sound at the price of a relaxed motorway drive keep with the Janspeed.

Yes would add to that I used to have a custom / straight through which was on when I bought it. Was fun at first but eventually got on my nerves with the boom and sounding like thunder, infact my missus could hear me parking up - and we lived on the 49th floor! Longer journeys - well 1 hour here cos Hong Kong is a small island used to be a headache literally as well when trying to cruise at 2-3.5 k and avoid the boom.

Changing to Janspeed was best mod nice burble to it but great when you boot it yet not boomy, and you will still get people hearing you coming trust me!

One point to note - backbox fits fine to a Mk1, but needs two welds for a Mk2 I believe the flange has a different threading.

My 2 pence worth is the Obisound sounds the dogs from the outside of the Vee, sounds good on A roads and around town etc, Motorways its noisy "Maybe to noisy if you was to do a lot of miles on m roads" induction kit is a waste if your after the induction noise as the noise of the exhaust wins hands down, The Janspeed (as fitted to Aimys(Daughter) Mk1) is no way as loud as the Orbisound, fine for long distance and when combined with a induction kit it sounds
