EVO track days - Bedford

Good evening to all my fellow V6-ers

Well the time has come after possibly 14 years to get back on a circuit. Me and my very good friend GPH (Graeme - LY owner) have had many a laps of Bedford Autodrome, Silverstone, Brands, Thruxton, Knock Hill, Castle Combe, Donington and many more. In fact the last time was Donington, I went there on a Renault Sport event in my then car a Clio 172, a very tall chap chucked me a key and said "go drive it and tell me you don't want one"... that tall chap was the very same Graeme, ex Renault UK Pr man. The key was for a pre-pro LHD french registered PH2 V6 clio. Now it wasn't there for general use so i was very privileged. He knew what I was about to experience so knew an order was as good as signed.

3 laps was enough for the then Mrs H who was sick in the pit lane, she obviously didn't like either the car or my driving. Me & Graeme then took the PH1 & Ph2 out back to back and found the difference in the handling characteristics between the two, I can whole heartedly say the Ph1 swaps ends easier than the 2!

Anyway I have booked and payed for an EVO track evening in June for me, the Vee and the current Mrs H. The main reason for none track activity is, some of you will know, I broke my neck 12 years ago (a day after taking delivery of my Vee). Its left me paralysed from the chest with some limitation in hand function. So I now can't drive as I used to so have until now left it as a memory of what I used to be able to do- without being billy big bollox, i was reasonably handy on four wheels before (I actually had a signed letter from Vicki Butler-Henderson quoting me as a instructor standard track driver for my court compensation case).

The car is still on its factory original fit rubber, so if they get scrubbed its no big deal as they could do with replacing anyway.

I'll let you all know how it feels to be back on track

Ian

That's a great story Ian, confident sales technique from Graeme too!

Enjoy your return to the track, what's the date your booked in for? Are the original tyres still useable? Mine had gone rock hard at 12 years old.

Its June 17th, the tyres will be pretty tough by now, but it never goes out in the rain so occasional dry use its fine. If they get knackered from this I'll replace them then

it will be good to see you giving the V6 a good exercising and finally wear out those 12 year old tyres!
It is the Trackday Evenings that EVO do at Bedford. about 3 hours from 5pm so plenty of time for a few laps without killing the car at an all day session.
I have booked too for 17th June (which will be a warm up for ORS in August ;) ) if anyone else fancies it :race:

Getting the vee on track is definitely the best thing Iv done in my ownership. Looking forward to hearing back when you've done it.

This sounds great I'm going to see if I can make it. Would be nice to catch up again Ian, it's only been 3 years (ish) now!!!

Well after dodging the torrential rain which thankfully stopped before the evening session started then started as we left, it made for a greasy Bedford track. However we both managed to survive in one piece! Time to look for new rear tyres now (Michelin PS3) but as these were fitted by Nick Trott 6 years and 10,000 miles ago I think they have lasted well :) Front's still have loads of years left in them. Well done - it's great when V6s mix it with other marques.

There's something visually compelling about seeing a BG and LY parked up next to each other. Very nice!

Luckily there are no pics of mine swapping ends (a couple of times) on a very wet & greasy circuit. Apparently I run out of talent.. fortunately I didn't run out of tarmac and kept it off the grass.

Cant say I enjoyed the whole event thought. Its the first time back on a track since being paralised and its just not the same. Mrs H had a great time, first time to drive the vee with a bit of anger and then 4 or 5 laps sitting in with an instructor in a TT. The day after we were invited to a Porsche open day with free BBQ and various things happening on site.. she even got a free hair spruce over. We are now saving for a 911 (im told).
