Engine knocking noise???

Recently, only on warm start ups, and disappears after a minute or so, there is a knocking noise coming from the engine. Everything, such as oil levels etc are fine but do any of the more technically minded people have any ideas. FYI all belts and services are fully up to date, with another ~4K miles till the next service is due. It is going to birchdown on monday for a service/MOT and this problem to be checked out but is it anything i need to worry about??

If it's at the top of the engibne, could quite possibly be cam timing de-phasers ...

I have had the de phasers knocking aswell £70 ish each I was told easy to change

Mine does the same. How do you changed the 'De Phasers'?

Yes, it sounds as if its at the top of the engine. Never makes a noise when starting from cold. Looks like it'll be an easy fix.

My car is OK (low miles) but it is quite common apparently and best to replace them during cam-belt change - though it is not necessary, they just take a while to pressurise - this info provided by Andrew at Motech who knows about such things :approve:

I've only managed to find one mention of the de-phasers. Have asked sammy if he can re-add the pictures.

I believe other twin cam Clios also have de-phasers so maybe check Cliosport too ...

Ah yes Martin hundreds of posts about de-phasers on Cliosport, the lack of which on here made me think Vees don't have them.

Cambelt end there's 2 one for each head

I have this sound like a ticking sometimes but presumed was a tappet?

Whats the price on deshapers then and does it mean cambelt and engine out to get this done?

Well, the guys at birchdown have worked there magic and found nothing mechanically wrong with LY300. They rung a few places and the consensus was to change from the recommended elf oil to a valvoline one. So far, a few hot starts in and not a peep from the engine. Seems to be getting better with age.

Short but interesting question, did they go for a thicker oil to try to compensate for wear, or thinner to try to remove tappet noise? personally, i use mobil 1 and have had no problems and thats 0w-40. please let us know.

IMHO 0-40 is too thin and would encourage any loosening tolerances to reveal themselves ... Probably a 5-40 would be a better all round choice, personally I use a 10-50 but obviously warm the engine up due to the extra thickness ... I use Silkolene (Fuchs) Pro S 10-50 ester based oil ... a Silkolene 5-40 is available ...

I used the elf stuff last time As well and thinking about it does seem more noisy than before

I'll go back to silkolene 5w 40 don't think can use other grades as it reaches 35-40c in HK during the summer

I did use forte top end treatment as well before that also seemed to help

I dont think it's tappets problem btw because I replaced all 24 of mine first time round thinking that was the problem but the noise is still there intermittently
