ELF or Shell?

Mr Webb

New Member
Checked with Reno and they have put Shell oil in my gearbox after the cambelt change/service. They assure me this has been made to be every bit as good as the ELF oil if not even better.

Does anyone have any experience with using both and does it make any difference?

Cheers.

Yep ... I recall it being very specific oil too when Renault (well actually Mike ex-Renault who now runs Rentech) did mine way back when.

What's so special about the Elf gearbox oil then?? Or let me rephrase, what is soooo special about the PK6 that it requires extraordinary oil from Elf???? I don't see it, and I opened the PK6 already. I don't even put in Elf or Shell, I'm using a local oil supplier, Kroon for years now and never had an issue with either box or engine, oil related.

It is just important to look at the additives in the oil, which is specified on the labels. For the rest it's just personal taste and the amount of money you wanna spend. What I do though is taking a look at the status of the oil in the engine and gearbox, if it doesn't get brown in stead of black or starts to foam. If it get's brown you're heading for major problems.

With the modern oils it's no problem to run over 100000 miles without changing. (you will need to change the oilfilter in the written intervals)

I can say from personal experience that there was a difference when i changed to the ELF oil.

I had shell put in by the dealer when I bought the car and the gearbox felt like a truck gearbox.

1st to 2nd gear was stiff when cold near impossible to engage and when warm the change was not that great.

I then swapped to the ELF oil for the PK6 gearbox and it felt like a totally new gearbox including from cold.

I don't know what the ELF oil has other than its more green than brown and smells terrible but it worked for me and was also 3 times the cost of the Shell oil

I was recomended Elf and got it quite cheep, thats why i went for it. Other oils are not much cheaper tbh.

Spent abit on engine oil as well, pro s stuff from silkoline.

I get what I think is good quality gear, if others want to got for ''cheaper'' then fair play :approve:

Yes ClarkieV6 sells it for 7quid a litre I think, but unfortunately i live in Hong Kong and he could not ship it!

Had to get it from the dealer - took 2 weeks to deliver from France and cost me 21 quid a litre! I added slick 50 as well to the box.

Cheaper than a new gearbox / rebuild though cos that would have been my next option to fix it.

I got silkolene as well - 50 notes for 5 litres and there is only 1 supplier in HK! Added slick 50 again - it made the engine feel free'd up and easier to rev

Make sure it is Elf TRX 75/80 and not TRZ 75/80

Redline MTL 70/80 is good too, but a bit more expensive. 2.4l max fill or the gear selection will hydraulic and get stiff to go in when hot.
