Ebay chips?

Hello, Someone could help me about what chip can I buy? I was looking at ebay and found two differents chips, one in Spain (clio cup or Grupo N), and the other at UK, (UK CLIO CUP CHAMPIONSHIP, SELLER PENNEYDUCK), which would you recommend?, I use the car every day , not to race, thanks!!!

pennyduck is known to us and he delivers as promised. Neo is the only one to have extensively tested his chip though

I'm always slightly confused with the chips, I presume thay just use the same map that they had on their car then?

That said, would it not be better for you to go down the rolling road and get your car re-mapped to your own cars specs, as the CLIO CUP team would have run a different engine components on a race car. (IE larger valves, bigger injectors, forged pistons and rods)

yes its always better to run a mapped chip.

generic poff the shelf chips main benefit is the extended rev range, never rely on one making extra power though.

Sometimes they can smooth the delivery, a lot of manufacturers have lean spots to improve emmisions at certain (cruise) rpm's

hi

i have one on mine.
been on the car for two years now
seems to run smoother
no torque differences that i can tell
seems to be more powerfull tho especially top end
i run mine on 97/98 octane fuel which they recommend plus some good quality octane booster as the standard car is set up for regular 95 octane fuel (phase 2 )

this definetly improves emmisions come mot time and mine has passed two mots set up this way
seems to smoke less too when you boot it as i guess the higher octane fuel burns more cleanly

mines a standard 19 16v with just an induction air filter

hope this helps

anyone feel free to correct me on any of this

i'll stand by pennyduck's chips, we slagged him off on retro, he came on and stood his ground and proved his chips do as they say, all credit to the man, he was most helpful in providing me with various revisions of his chip for various revisions of ecu and with my testing he can now provide a chip suitable for all types of 19/clio 16v, clio williams ecu.

If you purchase a chip from him, give him all the numbers off your current ecu, this will let him know which chip to provide you and mention retro-renault and that we recomended him.

But as chris h said, getting the car rolling roaded and remaped at the same time will see more gains from your car, as the rolling road ppl can map the chip to suit your car and any mods you have done to it

what kind of money, also how easy to fit? i'm guessing just straight swap more or less, or is it more involved?

Thanks Tom

hi

on my phase 2 19 16v i had to remove the ecu from the car.
then torx screws to remove the ecu aliminum cover.
you need to be fairly confident with a soldering iron to remove the old chip(rom ) from the circuit board.
then either solder in a chip holder(couple of squid) or the new chip directly onto the board.

or buy a second hand ecu and modify that one then you still have your orginal ecu in case anything goes amiss

depends how good you are at soldering

most ecus have the chip soldered onto the pcb, you need to be very careful in removing the old chip as you don't want to lift or damage any of the tracks on the pcb or damage any other components.

I fitted a socket to my ecu so i can swap chips in about 5 minutes, ecu out, case apart, old chip out, new chip in, do up case, put back in car.

the number under siemens is what you need to give pennyduck including the letter at the end - the letter indicates which revision the ecu is at
the C in this case means the immob circuit is included on the ecu board and not a seperate board usually hidden in a box under the centre console or behind the heater . this ecu is a pain in the arse to mod but mick can provide a chip for it, the C revision did not last long, the most common i have seen are B and D

here are the guts of the ecu

thats the chip that needs to be desoldered and replaced (always use a socket so its easy to change back to your original chip if needed)

WickedNeo-ecu5.jpg

this is why you have to be careful - surface mount resistors and capacitors on the underside where the chip sits, apply too much heat and those will simply fall off

Original chip out

new chip in

it can only be fitted ONE way

notice on the pic with the chip removed, the diagram underneath it shows a semi circle on the left hand side, the chip also has a little semi circle cut into one end, so semi circle over semi circle

when you have soldered the socket in, nick your other halfs nail polish and lacquer all the solder joints, this will seal those joints from water preventing corrorsion

Job done, now do up the case and whack it back in the car

on C revision, the ecu now needs to be reset

with bonnet, doors, boot SHUT, use your remote to plip the doors locked and then plip them unlocked, thats reset the ecu and immob on c revision

nah mate i just wanted a yes or no
j/k :p

Looks not too bad if a little delicate! How much would you expect to pay for the chip from this guy? Also where did you get your socket from, maplins or somewhere?

Ta!

Hello, thanks all of you, and specially to the engineer Wicked neo! Now I have to check all the numbers and revisions of the ecu, the chip includes the socket?

terrastudios was well on it for maps and chips last time we spoke, havent seen him around much lately but between us we had found some cheap stuff

need a eprom burner tho!!!

i have spoken to penny duck before, was nice guy, he can also adjust the map to suit the car i.e. if you have cams head work etc. just tell let him know

What about my ph1 ECU Simon? It looks completely different to the one in your pics...:?

Does it just replace the chip with the white label on it?

also how come the chip you've put in yours says 'clio coupe' on it? I thought that was the 2.0 chip?

Yep, one with the white label is the one to replace.
Clio / Coupe is the 2.0 litre one (Williams Clio / Megane Coupe)
Had it on mine as i was testing the immobiliser issue.

And your ECU looks different because it was the first kind used in the early ph1 19 16V before the revisions.

Neo, do you know if a car born with another ECU rev than C and no OE immobiliser, will gain immobilization by switching to a rev C ECU? or is there extra wiring required for the rev C immob stuff?

Simple answer, car wont start so no you cant switch to a C revison ECU.

Long answer.
We attempted it with Neals chammy a couple of years back to the effect it locked up neals car, would not start on the C revision ecu and when we refitted the original ECU, it still would not start.

I am sure Neal and Roger Red Hat will remember the occasion well, as it happened on the way to the first lady bower meet, i was running a chipped C revision, neal wanted to test it and see what power gains (if any) it would give his car, we swapped ECUs and that was our day over, ended up towing the chammy back to neals down the M1.

Dissconnected the battery and left it off for a good few hours, fully charged the battery and put it back on with the original ECU and the car fired up again (thank God for that)

A car that has a C revision ECU as standard will however start and drive fine with any other ECU revision.

LOL yeah I dunno what happened there.

In fact though the ECU I put back in it to get it going when we got home was a spare. The original one is still sitting in my shed with 'dead' written on it in Tippex. Fuck knows what happened to it. :?
