DIY A/C Recharge

Just bought the gun and a new A/C bottle from Halfords and recharged my Vee. After the engine came out I never had a chance to recharge the system again so bought the kit from Halfords. You connect the trigger hose to the low port and then fill the system until it falls between 25 and 30psi. Took me 2 mins and afterwards had icy cold A/C again in the vee. I paid £50 for the whole kit and got £10 back for returning the bottle. Now, in future all I have to do is purchase another bottle and top up once a year if it ever gets low. Easy.

i don't want to rain on your parade..but,
what about the PAG oil, this is a special lubricant that lubes the ac compressor as it works, most systems have between 1/2 to 1 litre in them to do this. this is why the leaky bit of the pipe is always wet and oily. be very warned.
what price a new compressor?

I can't see how this is legally allowed. I had to get x, y and z tickets to do aircon instalations and there are a few laws regarding the gas handling side of it. Records of the weight of gas used and expeled etc etc needed to be kept.

Fairplay for doing it yourself by the way. :approve:

i have to agree with spike mate. for the sake of a tenner or so extra i would rather have it done by a professional. i had it explained to me last month when i had a regas done in my vee that the diy kits dont seem to be up to much and wont last as long. i gave him 40 cash :)

With Brett on this, ok this was a empty system being filled but it is an offence to vent CFC's and HCFC's (which is what the can in the picure is) to air, max penalty is imprisonment! If your air con does not work for long then there is a leak which needs fixing.
We use Hydrocarbons in domestic refirgeration stuff which is far more user friendly and can be vented to air safely. Not sure if it is used yet in cars but its not a drop in replacement if so.

When i was on the tools we would purge the system to remove all air before refilling, This just sounds a short time fix.

Kwikfit do a top up service for about £70, But i guarantee it's a along the same lines, Two weeks later it's vented all the refrigerant and your back to square one.
