5 GT Turbo Dannyb's campus sleeper project

Hello everyone,

I have recently acquired a Renault 5 campus project courtesy of a surprise birthday gift from my wife :)
I am hoping to turn it into a bit of a sleeper really, initial idea is the 1.4 turbo (sorry don't know engine codes yet)
Trying to find one of these engines seems like a needle in a haystack though!
I am new to the Renault 5 so really looking forward to my new project and being part of the forum.
Will get some pictures hopefully this weekend in the light

Thanks

Engine options - 1.4 turbo from GT Turbo, 1.7 turbo from Volvo 480 Turbo, 1.8 16v from Clio 1/19 16v (so I assume Clio 172 is also an option as very similar). All these are well proven conversions and each have their pros and cons. What did you want to use the car for ? What is your budget?

hello and welcome, i also have a campus turbo. feel free to ask any questions you need answering. im sure through the club we can find you an engine too (y)
Thank you! Your campus turbo is the first thread I looked through actually, great thread car looks great :)

Umm not too extreme really probably road sleeper kind of thing, don't really have a budget in mind will be a progressive process, hope to keep the 5 for a long time
Hoping to do most of the work myself having trained in Motorsport engineering and currently being a computer aided design engineer so can fabricate parts if need be

good thing about renaults is its all interchangeable, very rarely does it require custom parts for the main engine conversions. can all be found from the renault parts bin all the way up to fitting the 172/182 engines

  • Sounds like my kind of project car! Will be keeping my eyes peeled for the 1.4 turbo engine, didn't realise there where so many conversions.

Finding the 1.4 Turbo setup isn't so hard (It's a C1J engine btw), what is hard is finding one within budgetary constraints. Prices have gone bananas over the last few years...so it's more about what you are prepared to pay than whats available.

Unfortunately it is. There is also a rogue practice of people buying items cheap after being helped out, then selling them on at twice or more than what they paid.

Would you want a fully built engine or happy to rebuild one? that would make life easier trying to find one

ive seen that happening within the 5 world, shadey traders about too. its a tough one. I got stung when i got all my bits. loads missing and ended up with a duff engine and gearbox to boot. Ask around though im sure you will find what you are looking for.

Thats a shame.
For ease yea a fully built one, however i would consider building one, however i dont have anywhere to rebuild one.
especially a clean area, (my mum has a small holding with barns etc)

For the moment anyway i will keep with the 1.1 and do some cosmetic modifications first to keep my hands dirty :)

Where did you acquire yours from?

are the torsion bars on 5's easy to remove? i had a 306 before and had to get some help due to being so stiff!

My opinion, 1.4 Turbo easiest route for big power but parts getting expensive and hard to find. 1.7 Turbo makes sense if your going to leave the engine fairly standard - more one for a daily driver. I'd be inclined to drop a 16 v in. 170bhp out the box , more responsive and better on fuel (better for track work), and bits are 2 a penny. Oh did I mention I've got a sweet engine and box I'm selling in the garage :0). But that aside I do think its the best conversion unless your looking for over 200 bhp.

Ok just looking into tyres and according to Black circles i should have 155/70/r13

however i seem to have 145/70/r13's would this make any difference??

I'm sure mine were changed to 145 70 13s but now replaced with 185/60/13 I wouldn't worry too much about it. There's a little difference but I doubt it'd be noticed

As long as they're all the same size it makes little difference, speedo might over or under read but 10%+2 rule should keep you within speed limits

Just a little update really, this weekend started it up and just would not run idle from cold.
Any throttle or choke that was applied killed it instantly.

Would this be a case of rebuilding it or needing the carb set up properly?
Either is something i would love to do as i have never owned a carb'd vehicle before!

If anyone has some kind of guide to getting one run right that would be awesome

My 9 does that when the fuel gets old and goes off.
