Damn, why did I let it go........

My Porsche 968 Club Sport has just been featured in no less than two magazines - Classic Cars (Quentin Wilson's Smart Buys of 2014, May issue) and GT Porsche (April 2014)!

Think I made my first car-related mistake of 2014

Time will tell though, but QW predicts the 968CS will hit £40K!

Now then when will we get a Vee to feature in such an article..............

So far the Vee has been featured in Classic Cars, March 2004 (Future Classic section), even before it was out of production, and Practical Classics, July 2007 (Up-and-Coming-Classics).

I wouldn't be surprised at £40K but I do think that it will take quite a few years yet [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

Indeed, you are right - the good ones will eventually get there. In the continent the prices of good ones are already approaching £30K, with a couple in the UK asking £28K plus, so it is a matter of time.

However, I am not sure Mine would have reached those figures, at least in the near future, if at all. It has had very heavy use over its 20-year life, 7 owners, track time, rear-ended once and has always been a daily-driver, so although mechanically very good (it certainly was maintained extremely well), cosmetically the car needed to be spruced up with a full glass-out paint job, fixing the rust that was beginning to take hold near the driver's side B pillar and rear wheel arches. This is exactly why I decided to part with it......but impressed to see that the mags have looked beyond that and concentrated on the fact that it is basically a brilliant car to drive.

This has to be my biggest mistake ever, that of letting go of a mint 964RS in 2009 with 32,000 miles on the clock [smilie=icon_cry.gif]

This 3-owner 964RS sells at Monaco auction for £220K!!!! LINK & LINK

Total number built is around 2,150 worldwide, not 290 as stated by RM auctions.

Looks like getting back into air-cooled Porsche ownership may be getting harder by the day..............

I saw that article and winced!

Having said that - it all looks a little dubious! I have no doubt such a car commands a six figure value - but only just!

How many Vees were built worldwide (by comparison)?

Does that figure include or exclude the dubious RS America?

I too was amazed to read the article since the last I heard a low-mileage, standard 964RS LWT was commanding just over £100K, but what I noticed was that Neil Dickens (owner of The Hairpin Company) appears to have endorsed its value. Now he does deal with some immaculate examples of all manner of cars, and ALL are at the very top end of their prices bracket, and sold mainly to collectors.

So for the right buyer, and of course the auction was held in Monaco, this may have been the right car, and RM have confirmed the sale price on their web site. This sale may set a new precedent, which will no doubt drag the prices of all RS', and quite possibly all air-cooled Porsches, up with it.

Having been Porsche less after 14 years this is not good news to me! Damn.....

I am sure Duncan will have a good handle on how many Vees were built worldwide......but according to the V6 Register 1,513 Phase 1's and 1,309 Phase 2's.

The production numbers are of the 3.6 RS only (both LWT and N/GT models), not the RS 3.8 and certainly not the RS America, which is not a RS at all. The 964RS, 993RS and 968 CS were not officially imported into the North America.

I bet there are more 'surviving' examples of 964 RS than there are Vees worldwide.

Dulan, I always found I had a bad back after a ride on UK roads in a 964 RS. Great track car though. As you rightly state, too valuable to rag these days!

Agree, which is why the prices of Vees in the UK need to catch up with those in the rest of the continent, but unless, and until, the buyer demographics change it will be a long/slow process. Starting to happen though........

The trick with the 964RS' ride on bumpy roads is to install the 993RS' front struts, which tones down its skittishness. Once this is done the handling on the road is fantastic.

Yeah, tell me about these being a responsibility - just got out of the 993RS, which I felt became a responsibility after I had put it through a minor restoration, but felt that I parted with the 964RS too early. I actually wanted to sell the 993RS then, but Paul M. talked me into selling the 964RS instead! [smilie=icon_cry.gif]

Didn't Paul have a 993 GT2 Clubsport?

That must be worth the thick end of a £1M by comparison...

He did indeed, but sold it a few years ago - it was last listed for around £350K by Hexagon. Not sure of its whereabouts now.....and it was one of approximately 26 cars built!

So when 964RS were £100k right?
; )
No, I believe the 964RS' were around the £80-90K mark then (in 2012) - I think I posted up here when that Blut Orange 93GT2 Clubsport was advertised.

Nice write up. Certainly 1997-99 was the best time to buy.

My university friend had a similar lhd black one that was acquired by Richard Meaden about 10 years ago.

I'm still staggered by that auction price!!!

Indeed, but when I bought mine in 2005 I paid £30K for it, and that was with a mint 993 C4 in part exchange! So values stagnated for close on 8 years.........before steadily moving up, and then started to accelerate - started to really rocket from 2012 onwards.
