Well after a few years of thinking about it, I finally started to look seriously into buying a Turbo 2.
Various contact with sellers over Europe and finally being pointed in the right direction by John Price, I found this in Aberdeen.
The guy i bought it from was more of a classic Alfa fan and was offered this car in 1999/2000. Not knowing what kind of "Renault 5 turbo" it was, he secured it for
£3000!!! It was under a dust sheet in a garage where it had sat for a number of years and needing a little bit of TLC to get her started.
History of the Car.
1984 sold new to a female owner in London, her ownership lasted less than 6 weeks and took it back to Renault stating she didn't like how it drove and not practical. (Radbourn racing, Wimbledon)
Renault then kept the car in their ownership until 1991, Certified with a nice letter from them.
1991-1999 it had 2 other owners between England and France before finding itself north of the Border.
Im rather lucky that also by chance i made contact with a previous owner, Alan, of Hvanworld.co.uk (check them out) who also shared some history with me he had kept and only recently found again.
Finally in 2014 placed a deposit on the car after almost 100 pictures and numerous long telephone calls with the previous owner.
Pearl White Turbo 2 1984,12,000 kms from new, Original Radbourne Racing press car from 1984 with various press and magazine articles. 100% original with the option of a Devil exhaust, which does sound lovely.
After a good look over the car and various discussions with Olly Melliard, I decided to freshen her up. A long list of items were purchased from various European sources, full set of Suspension bushes, Fuel tank hoses, Brake service kits and Engine mounts. I then removed the Bosh K-tronic system to send to KMI fuel injection specialists for service and set up. After advice from Royal Mail, it was sent next day recorded...... As you can guess never made it to its destination. I then found out it has been classed as hazardous goods and unsafe for shipping. Of course it was safe enough to go from central Scotland across the Irish Sea to Belfast, where they then told me after inspection, a letter would be sent to me to determine if it has been sent on or destroyed... Unsafe to ship south but safe enough to cart across to norther Ireland. Thankfully with friends in Belfast i managed to recover this and set it back on route.
The Engine was also removed to be sent to JL engineering in London for a freshen up. Unfortunately this has been sat on a pallet now for almost 9 months waiting to go...
With still working overseas at the time, progress was zero and it wasn't until my family and I relocated back to Scotland in December 2015, that i have managed to get back into it albeit a little slow due to new house commitments and 4 young children..
My aim for the car is to keep 100% original (even the spare tyre has the original Michelin sticker on it) and return her to as close to perfect as i can. I like to be a bit of a perfectionist and i'm sure with my other projects you will see this also. This is why i keep telling myself, they take a little longer than planned...
Lets hope 2016 is the year for this
