Coolant Temperature Sensor location R5 Supercinq

Hi Folks!

My Renault 5 Supercinq is terrible at starting first thing and takes about 8-10 goes to start I googled this and found on the Honest John website a discussion of this problem the solution seems to be that the Coolant Temperature Sensor needs replacing and so I ordered a replacement coolant temperature sensor from a car parts seller on Ebay. I doubled checked with the seller that I was buying the right part and it arrived yesterday it looks like this:

My neighbour came round this morning to replace it but he cannot find its location the Haynes manual states that it is located on the left hand end of the cylinder head but does not provide a diagram or photo of its location - does anyone know where it is and has anyone ever replaced the coolant temperature sensor in their R5 Supercinq?

With many thanks

Regards

Harley :)

the waterpump is attached to the left hand side of the head, as you look at the engine from the front of the car.
on top of the waterpump, towards the back of the casting , the temp switch screws into the top of the waterpump body.- might be hiding under some water pipes?
dont over tighten it, you might crack the pump body - use sealant or PTFE tape on the thread :)

Dear Sparkie,

We followed your instructions and this is what we found:

and with the cap removed:

As you can see it only has one metal connector/ pin whereas the part that was sent (and my model verified with my number plate) has two metal connectors/pins

We didn't change anything as we need to clarify that that is or is not the coolant temperature sensor but we started the car with the choke out full and a bit of pressure on the gas pedal and it started. The weather is cold and dry and the starting issues happened when the weather was wet and damp.

Harley :)

some have 1 pin, some have 2 pins.
gt turbo's have two, whereas gordini turbo's have 1.
looks like you got sent the wrong one :(

Thanks Sparkie - I think that perhaps I should order it from Renault to ensure that I receive the correct one!

What is your opinion on the change in starting behaviour? Do you think it is related to the change in the weather?

Regards

Harley :)

Just as a matter of interest, there is a metal plate that covers the opposite end of the head to the water pump, is there a sensor screwed into that too? I know sometimes renault screw sensors into that plate too. Maybe the one on the water pump is only for the dashboard display, and the engine sees the temp from another unit...

I am having trouble sourcing a single pin temperature coolant sensor I contacted my local Renault dealer and they said that they would have to contact Renault but I haven't heard anything back. Does anyone have any suggestions for Renault parts specialists where I might try to source the single pin temperature coolant sensor?

Thanks :)
