cambelt service around aberdeen

Hi guys, the clio is needing a cambelt service soon im wondering if anyone has a garage recommendation around Aberdeen as i dont really want to travel that far

Hi mate. I can only recommend making a night away of it and use Rentec in Edinburgh. North east Ali could maybe recommend more. It speaks volumes though when lots of Scottish guys send their cars down south to Steve plain. He’s done loads now.

Yep. I’d struggle to recommend anyone in the NE as I’ve never used anyone for the belts. Steve Plain did mine.

I did use Jim King (Inverurie) for a service a year or so ago (Renault Specialist) and they were great.

Steve Plain will be doing ours when due, but then again sheffield is only 50mins away. He did have a courtesy car available and he’s not bothered about it, which is refreshing.

In the words of the wise, it goes, it stops and your arse is off the floor

I've no personal experience of having belts done but thought I'd throw my tuppence worth in anyway.

The garage I bought mine from had the car a long time and knew the belts needed done so it was done for me picking up.
Where they got it done I don't know, was just glad it wasn't me picking up the bill ;)

Now that they are somewhat due/overdue again I'll be making an enquiry to my local service shop - Falkland Performance in Fife.
Have used them for years for all sorts of jobs on my 'weekend toy' but whether or not they will tackle the belts on a Vee is another question.

While the expertise of Steve is written into the Vee history books it's a long way and added expense, shipping the cars up and down for us Scots

Personally, I think Vee cambelt service is a bit like open-heart surgery. You certainly don’t want to risk a muppet on the case...

On the flip side, most 5 year old low mileage belts have looked mint. I decided to go for a 7.5 year belt service strategy on my pride & joy. That saves 1/3 of the belt service costs over 15 years.

Just my two penneth...

A cambelt is a cambelt, though yes its got 4 cams to wrap around so a little harder it's getting to the fecking thing thats the hassle. One of my Renault master tech mates has done one in the car but said after doing it he went back to taking the engine out lol. I think he had to take the rear side window out.

I agree on time strategy, same for my 21 as well. Will happily leave 50% over time for low miles as long as its not sat unused for months and months at a time. I run (or drive if I can) all my wrecks at least once a month up to fan temp with a bit of fast idle.

The cam belt is not the issue, its all the gubbins associated with taking the engine out and getting it back in again that is the problem, once the lump is on the deck the swapping of bits is not that difficult, what is also needed is someone who can spot the other problems that might be lurking there. :approve:

Another option is ALS Performance in Carlisle, they are independent Renault specialists, mine is going there next week for a cambelt change and service

Im now 8.5 years from last belts change, with the belts having done 46,587. Not sure my nerves can take anymore so will be booking it in with steve this winter.
