Build Number

The car I'm, hopefully, buying this weekend is a damaged repaired car, while it was sat in the salvage yard pre repair some theiving git stole the build number badge, Renault UK say they should be able to get the build number for me from France, but it will take a few weeks, is the number recorded anywhere else apart from on the badge? I also asked if they could get me a replacement badge, they said no  anyone know where I could get one made? or know where there might be one available from a car being broken, it would probably be easy enough to change the number on one, to the number it should be :?

I already asked him, unfortunately that one also has the badge missing.

P.S. I also need the document folder with handbook etc, as they're missing too.

Rich,

When a limited edition Toyota GT4 of mine was written off I kept all of it's documentation, Carlos Sainz signed booklet and plaques etc. I would think some V6 owners would do the same if theirs was written off. Funny thing was the guy who eventually bought the salvage contacted me for these things and I had to politely say that I was keeping them ...

So ... you will probably need to trawl around to pick up everything you are talking about. I would suggest you check on e-bay for things like hand books, documents etc. I have picked up things like accident management packs and the book which came with the Mk1 (even though mine is a Mk2). I saw a clio V6 owners manual on e-bay once too.

There is a thread on this forum which lists everything which came with a new V6 - if you wanted to collect the various things.

Also the standard build plaque is just a laminated plastic thing - and probably impossible to get hold of unless you make one. I wouldn't think you could change the number either easily due to the lamination. This was the same for me with Toyota and special build plaques, they are absolutely unique to a specific car and cannot be supplied OEM.

Once you have your build number I would suggest you get a nice CNC machined alloy plaque made up - now there's an idea !

Good luck ;-)

You could try these guys: theantsnest.co.uk, they make 'bubble plates' but you have to supply the graphics yourself. A one-off might be costly but you could try to blag a sample.

Thanks for the advice guys, I got the details of the previous owner from the seller, and wrote to him today, so hopefully he did what you did and kept them, and hopefully he'll do what you didn't and give/sell them to me :D

I thought imports still had a badge? or do you mean he removed the badge to hide that its an import? will it say import on the log book?

As I understand it all cars were given a plaque at the factory, but then that plaque was replaced with a UK specific number for official UK cars at the import centre. This is why import cars tend to have a higher number since their plaque is one of the "whole world" numbers vs. the lower more limited UK-only numbers.

Ahh I see, cheers.

BTW just out of interest incase anyone knows the car... it had a private plate on it originally, which was V6 GBR.
