So WUBO is to be replaced. The car she wants (well wanted) is another Coupe, her last coupe 9 - 7 - coop she regrets selling.
So on Saturday which was a very busy day for me (5am up for white chamade mot, then off to see a 2005 Astra and blah blah blah) looking through gumtree a Bronze (v5 said bronze more brown to me) Coupe jumped out. Kevin had alerted me to the car.
Turns out Kevin had already got in touch with the guy for me.
At first she didn't like the colour I did as I have never seen one that colour. It was up for £650, I said we won't pay anywhere near that. Worth a look anyway.
It was a 2001 1.4 16V with a/c and leather. It was good looking in a horrific type of way
Got there had a look at it and the rear arches were good, the front had been in a bump at some point and it was repaired the ac worked (the fan on the rad was dissconnected though... plugged back in and it worked fine). No cambelt change, no tax but mot'd until next April, rear bar at the axle as usual totally rotten away, good spare and overall very tidy.
The guy took me out a test drive and I felt a knocking through the floor felt like a drop link tbh. He said it was really fast and 40mph is not fast but this guy thought it was a rocket.
So Emma said yes but no more than 500.
So the haggling began and I eventually paid £475.
So the deal was done we headed up to fuel it up as the light was on. All good except it was slow. Emma had said she won't miss the power it won't be slower then the 2l lag, well she changed her tune at that point.
Fueled up and it cost £66 to brim the tank. Headed off homeward bound.
Sitting at 70 ish the knocking started to get worse, we pulled over and it turns out both front wheels were loose. Tightened them up and headed on our way again, much better. She said the oil light was flickering occasionally as I was tightening the wheels,I saw it and was confused but it flickered only for a second. I said I will look at it when we get back.
So cruising along saying look what the trip comp says over 500 miles etc etc she said I have nothing. I look over and the dials are still up then I noted we were slowing and the dials were in the same position.
So hard shoulder and WUBO and my old dear stop behind us. Nothing in WUBO tool wise, nothing in the coupe tool wise either.
A frantic search for a dead fuse or something. Then I managed to get the pos terminal off and normally with a uch issue you can short the leads out and it will work again. This is a common fix on meganes and we had to do it to the laguna about once a month to regain throttle control.
Nothing dials stayed up. No power to anything, no horn, lights windows, anything. It was dead, totally dead.
On the phone to Kevin and said get a hold of the guy.
A combo van pulled over and the saint that was in the conveyance gave me a strap so we could tow the thing. May he be blessed with riches and fine females, never even got his name but karma +100 to him.
So Wubo hooked up to the coupe and off we went. Wubo even towing the coupe was quicker than the coupe itself I think
Off at the next junction to take it to a garage I work at sometimes, of course it was nigh on 6pm and the gates were dubbed up.
So into a supermarket car park to try more fixes nothing. Kevin said the guy is willing to refund us, which is as well. We knew where he lived and we had the full v5 in our possession...
He showed up with back up in the shape of his son and was ok but was refusing to give us the cash until he was loaded up and on his way. No chance.
Eventually full refund including fuel and no one had broken legs etc.
This was quite an ordeal. A total uch fail meant nothing had any power at all. So towing no brake lights or anything, no hand signals as the windows couldn't open.
Anyway got some pics of it at the car park before the guy came. Shame as I liked the car. If it had cost 100 quid I would have just taken it home and sorted it or done a mad conversion on it. But it didn't and its put Emma off a new car for a while. So WUBO may get some more love and parts thrown at it.
In car park with the dials frozen from when it died WUBO in front.
