Aftermarket Exhaust - How loud can I go?

Jonny

New Member
I am looking to replace the exhaust system on my car, can spend up to around £1000 or there abouts, I am wanting a system which is quite loud and will pop/bang and backfire. What would be the best exhaust system to go for? and would i be best going for a de-cat aswell?

Two cats and a collector box to get past before you can produce pops and bangs.

Three stages:

Stage 1 - Replace back box with aftermarket. Quicksilver Supersports is one of the loudest (bit boomy between 2000-3000 rpm though)
Stage 2 - Replace collector box with straight through pipes (these will have to be made)
Stage 3 - Cut out cats from downpipes/replace downpipes with straight pipes. Only one off the shelf item I think (Janspeed) so again alterations/replacements will need to be made

Stage 1 will provide the odd pop but will be mostly grumbling and gurgling
Stage 2 will provide pops and bangs but will still be slightly muted
Stage 3 will be at the epic TVR end of the scale but will more than likely fail an MOT/track day noise restrictions/police roadside checks.

This would be a very good place to start if you were to choose the stage 2 path ------> MK2 Janspeed exhaust group buy

Cheers for the comment mate.

Alot of useful information there.

Has anyone on the site done all 3 stages and is there alot of work involved in this?

A video of a car with all 3 stages done would be great to i hear the sound.

Thanks for the support and plug, i do agree with all this exept the last stage is available from janspeed but its a full manifold setup and bolts straight on to the ph1, not yet for ph2.
the one we are all waiting for on the group buy does pop and bang a little on the overrun but is still within reasonable limits and you can still hear yourself think at low rpm.
the person to get some info for decats is brett (oldskoolbaby) as he is going this route at the mo.

Matt has done all three stages (ph2). There's discussion and I think a sound clip here -------> Ph2 straight pipe system

For a more recent discussion on the topic see here ------> Trophy exhaust chat

Spike mate, the Janspeed system that contains full manifolds etc etc "stage 3" does fit the Ph2 cars mate. Shaun has it currently fitted to his lunar and in my opinion is bloody pucka!

Obviously, if the all new part yourself and Janspeed are developing sounds better than Shauns, this will be an epic setup :approve:

This week will see me removing my full system and replacing both down pipe and collector box with nice bent pipework less the cats. Will be interesting to see what it sounds like as the QS Supersport has next to no baffles so will be pretty much as freeflowing as possible with out changing the manifolds.

Awesome mate. :approve: :approve: Can't wait to hear it. I'll be following suit as soon as the cash is available.

Out of interest how much do you think it will cost you all done and fitted. PM if you'd prefer.

BRETT MATE:
just to clarify for some of the less knowledgeable on here, yes, the ph 1 system does fit the ph2 car, personally i feel very badly as things dont seem to line up however, you cannot fit only part of the system as the couplings are different, so if you have allready got a backbox you cannot add to it with the manifolds from janspeed (ph2).
also imho the tube on the ph1 silencer from janspeed is too small (we have had this argument before) and i think it hurts power on the ph2.
so if you want janspeed manifolds for your ph2 get them adapted for a better silencer or fit with a different silencer for a ph1 car.
i hope this clears things up.

Yeah your definatly right when it comes to the Janspeed/Ktec back box on its own. However, the Janspeed Full system fits PERFECTLY to both cars. The engine is identicle on both Ph1 and 2 and so is the rear silencer mounting point hence it fits both cars. The restrictive argument is purely a mater of opinion I reckon (until dyno proven using both set ups) and after speaking to people who produce manifolds for some pretty radical machinery I know where my thoughts lay :approve:

Brett: i dont think the janspeed back box fits at all well. the outlets are not even equidistant from the centre,
are we going to have the boxing gloves out!

Well I'm going to lay you right out if it comes to that!! ;)

Christ knows what ones youve seen fella?? Shauns Janspeed fit and finish is much like is car. Perfect. Its the same with Chris' illiad V6 who is selling this week, perfect. I doubt he'd settle for anything else.

Tell you one thing thing Spike, I am looking forward hearing yours. Like I've said before, Shauns car sound beautiful. With the slightly bigger bore yours will sound epic.
