Hi Folks!
I'm a new member. I owned 3 R5 MkI autos between 1988-91 and have recently bought an F Reg (198
R5 Mk II/Supercinq auto 5 door. The first two owners of this R5 (1st owner 1988-91, 2nd owner 1991-2011) garaged it. It was sold on in July 2011 to a person in London who used it as a stop gap and who then sold it onto someone else who also used it as a stop gap until they received their new car. They sold to a chap in New Malden who has just sold it to me as the boot isnt big enough to accommodate his mobility scooter.
The R5 is in really good condition body wise there is a very small rust bubble under the window rubber on the drivers door and a rusty scratch on the step of the drivers door. As I am disabled I am going to ask a neighbour to see to these two spots what should he do to remove the rust and treat it?
It needs to start with the choke and may need a new starter motor but I have driven it out a bit and it drives very well and hasn't broken down yet (touch wood!). Inside it reminds me of the Mini Metro. My first R5 was a T reg 3 door automatic which I had for about a year it needed a new O/S sill so my parents decided that I should get a different car. I then bought an X reg 3 door automatic that had a head gasket problem so I moved onto a W reg 3 door auto which had only done 26K (this model has also only done 26K) my specialist wanted me to drive with my left foot so I bought a Metro automatic which had more room for the pedal conversion to drive with the left foot I sold my W reg R5 auto to a friend who was middle aged not a teenager and they crashed it into a ditch and it was written off which was a great shame. Having had a Metro the inside of the R5 Supercinq reminds me of the Metro's interior and I wonder if Renault were influenced by the emergence of the Metro in designing the interior of the R5 Supercinq. I prefer the MkI R5 but am limited as I can only drive an automatic. A Mk I auto did come up in the week before I bought this one but it was not local and I would not buy it without seeing it or test driving it first.
Anyway I am enjoying driving an R5 automatic again and so any advice on how to repair the 2 rust spots will be greatly received.
I have photos of my R5 Supercinq Auto on flickr:
