5 GT Turbo Advice regarding oil in turbo intake pipe.

Mark Davis

Brapmaster extraordinaire
I need a bit of advice please.
Currently getting a little bit of oil in my turbo inlet to air filter pipe. See pictures.
Is this normal ? Any idea what could be causing it?
There is no excessive play in shaft, boosts fine, no smoke, (a tiny bit on start up) no strange noises.
No issues with oil level or pressure either.
My K&N breather filter has started dripping a bit of oil recently so have purchased catch tank, just not plumbed in just yet.
I should add, GT2560r, no more than 6 months old, probably covered 2000 miles.
So yeah any thoughts, advice or comments?
Thanks in advance.

Get that breather filter binned too and bosh the breather hose into a decent sized plastic bottle 1.5ltr. The old c1js do breathe when driven heavy. Ive had an inch of oil in my catch tank when using mine hard on track but never really get anything in on the road. You will see a little bit of condensation in most of the time thats about it really.

Yeah it's been a while so can't wait. Not happy with 4th fuelling as it is so will definitely need to sort fuelling.

I've also bought a walbro competition pump and different filter. I'm going to see if a proper pump will help things and with any luck I'll be able to turn malpassi down a bit or go back to stock reg.

Still getting bogging enough to piss me off. I want to resolve that asap.

UPDATE:

I have been out sorting the breather set up this morning so decided to check the black breather pot and the hose running off rocker cover, I found quite a bit of smeg/mayo type fluid so I gave them a good clear out. I've now fitted some cheap chinese D1 Spec catch tank and used 12mm ID fuel/oil hose from pot to catch tank. See pictures;

1) Is the smeg/mayo a potential issue or something to be concerned about or normal? (when i see this I think HG)
2) From the pictures can you see anything wrong with the way I have set the breather system up?

I've been out for a solid hour this morning with no smoke, no over heating, holds water, oil level/pressure normal, drives and boosts fine to the point I put a Focus RS in its place. Good times. ;-)

After spirited run I checked turbo inlet hose and their was fresh oil in there, confused ??

A little bit of spunk in the breather of a c1j in winter is pretty standard mate dont worry about it. Bin the catch tank and use a plastic bottle 1.5ltr sized with holes in the top. That cheapo one will fill up with condensation fast

When the crankcase vents its gas through the breather that gas contains water vapour, same as the exhaust fumes. Its a byproduct of combustion. You cant see it cos its a gas. When the steam exits the exhaust on a cold day you see the steam condense into 'smoke' much like when you breathe and see your breath. Same effect as the cold air cools the gaseous water. With the breather its doing the same thing, the cooler breather system condenses a little of the water vapour passing through the breather and then that mixes with the oil to create mayo like that.

Clio 1.2's are a terror for it, the rocker cover oil filler is a long neck poking up past the inlet and every time you pop the cap off it's mayo-gunked to fuck and your head screams "HEAD GASKET" but actually its because the oil cap is far enough up to be cool enough to condense vapour in the engine, mix with oil and create mayo. I have used it as a negotiating point, "head gasket on the way out mate, look *shows gunked filler cap* i'll give you (less than asking price) for it" :) :)

Cheers Dave, great info.
