ABS not working

Ever since i bought my vavler the ABS light has been on the dash, the guy i bought it from told me this was because it had had new discs at some point and somehow as a result of this the abs light had come on, however he said it was only the sensor that was out hence the light on the dash, and that the ABS did actually work.

I thought this seemed odd at the time, and on a drive out tonight after i changed the steering column, i tried jamming the brakes on down a hill, now it was soaking wet so i dont know if that would have any bearing on things, but when i threw out the anchors the wheels just locked up.

Is there anything i can easily check that would suggest why it wasnt working?

On the other hand, should i just leave it broken as ive heard it can be annoying and intrusive when working.

Look at the rear of the disc barke on the inside lip and see if you can see lots of little ridges in the ring shape, if you have then you have the correct discs and the issue lies elsewhere, if not then theres your problem.

Ahaaa, that may well be it.  Ive not checked but i know it recently had new discs and pads before i bought it, and the guy who fit them obviously wasnt quite up to par, as they squeal like a bitch so im guessing he didnt fit shims.

Ill give it a looking over this weekend and report back.

two reasons they squeal usually. metal to metal contact. as in rubbing between pad back and caliper pistons usually or really poor quailty pads can squeal like a pig.

my abs is fooked too :( cleaned at the front, gonna have to do the back now too... good job i bought an extra 2 axle stands!

Sorry to rescurrect this but thought i would post here rather than starting another thread on this.

Basically on my new valver, i've noticed the ABS light remains illuminated after the engine has started, so i'm guessing the ABS doesn't work.

I seem to remember the discs having the ABS ring on them, or i remember seeing one with it on at least.

So a couple of things i've noted to check:

Check the ABS sensors are plugged in
Check the discs have the ABS ring on.

I'm guessing there are ABS sensors at the rear as well?

Is there anything else i need to check?

If the sensors are plugged in, and the discs are correct, what else might the problem me? Just wanna try and sort it before it goes in for the MOT!

Coould well be that even though the sensors are in fine, they could well still be fucked.

Pretty sure this is the case on mine. Have ABS discs, the sensors are in and fine, but still the abs doesnt work.

Just take the bulb out the dash if you dont want it popping up on the mot.

Not sure, id suspect so, dont know how easy it is to do though. If you find a way to sort it let me know as its one of the niggles on mine id like to get sorted.

the sensor rings are on the cv joint (or are we talking about the rears?)

Both really. I thought they were on the shaft. 90% sure my shafts have them.

Where does the sensor plug in?

on the front, they are 100% on the cv joint

the sensor sits in the hub (and is impossible to remove without smashing :D)

the sensor has about 1ft of cabling which connects to the rest of the cable just behind the arch liner (on the rear of the suspension turret)

Pretty sure they are connected... hmm!

Is there a way to get the light to go out without removing the bulb? Ie, can you remove the fuse for ABS to make the light go out?
