ABS light constantly on

Hi,

Just bought a 21 Quadra abs found that the ABS lamp has been removed. Popped a new one in and suprise suprise, it's constantly on! The system seems to be charging ok and the brake behavior is fine except when you get upto 70+ when breaking gives a pretty heavy juddering sensation. I'm changing the front pads tomorrow so I'll clean the targets/ sensors at the same time and will do the back ones while I'm about it. But would just dirty sensors cause a constantly on dash lamp?

Yes! Dirty target's will upset the abs every time. It's the first thing to check, if your lucky it won't be the computer as this is both very rare and very expensive! But there are a few about spare in the club.

A Few bits you should know.

1)If the light is on CONSTANTLY, you have a sensor down or another electrical/computer issue. If the light goes out after starting the car then reappears its another issue probably targets. This applies to 2 and 4wd alike.

2)Quadra's ONLY have self-diagnosing ABS systems.

3)Quadra's ONLY have a 5th sensor, reporting back lateral G-force to the computer which it uses in anti-lock calculations. If this is out you'll struggle getting another.

Are you competent with a multimeter and continuity testing?

The wiring loom, computer, rear sensors and 5th sensor and brake master unit are ALL 4wd specific....! :angry:

What is the best way to clean the rings/ target? I used brake cleaner on the ring and got it pretty much clean. Was tempted to use engine de-gunk on the one as it's got grease from a slipped-off CV gaiter...
