Hi, All,
This weekend has seen the 22nd running of the Abingdon Motor Sport CAR-nval where a 150 car, two course, sprint and an autosolo took place on Saturday and a 100 car, 70 stage mile rally took place yesterday within the confines of Dalton Barracks (Abingdon Airfield) in Oxfordshire. I ended up being one of the Club Stewards for the weekend and took my Vee out. Hardly a lot of miles as Abingdon Airfield is only six miles from my house.
For the stage rally, car 43 was a Renault 5 Turbo 1, crewed by Andrew Cooper and Caroline Price. The car turned out to be an ex-works example and was being tended by John Price - the acknowledged marque expert. They finished 26th overall and second historic car, only four places behind a Ford Escort RS2000 Mk1 and ahead of other cars including a Triumph 2.5Pi, a Riley One Point Five (honestly) and a real horde of Minis (19 in all). These cars were mainly taking part in the Historic Rally Car Register's Old Stager Rally Championship that incorporates a Mini Cup. It was a hot day on the airfield but 78 cars were listed as finishers of the 97 starters. The results were dominated by specialist Darrian mid engined rally sports cars and large engined Escorts, with a Millington powered four wheel drive Proton in second place overall.
I made an opportunity to take a couple of photos of the Vee alongside the 5 Turbo - the latter looking great as it was hustled round the stages on the airfield's runway and tracks.
