I'm a where there's been a few clios knocking about with this conversions mk1s and mk2s and know of one Renault 5 has anyone got any in depth knowledge to of who has done this as they seem good engines to get 300bhp for not a lot of money compared to forging etc an f series engine thanks jack

Hi jack,

Yes you're right, the engines are small and strong and can be shoehorned into a Clio/5 with relative ease, if you (or you have access to) are a good fabricator.

My Clio Valver Vag was originally built by Flan, and used a modified mount on the O/S and on the N/S it had a new gearbox mount fabricated onto the chassis rail.

My car had a Catalytic converter fitted by an intermediary owner which I now understand sapped power big time. The car was running 246bhp when I had it, and then I sold it back to Flan and he removed the cat and the power went straight back up to 300bhp!

Believe me though, the car was as quick as a stabbed rat at 246bhp as it was still so light compared to the new breed of Hyper Hatches available today, and you could really have a giggle surprising many other so called Fast Cars ....:dn:

Fantastic im set on the conversion tbh it seems a no brainier as even with the f series engine the vag gear box gets used anyway I'm just interested in how it gets mounted to the subframe as in the clios the mounts are different etc

Yep cracking little lumps evem today, Adey is right and at 280ish on k04 setup safe, responsive and as Steve know at less power very quick

Mine was a moddified gt subframe welding golf mount to sit the engine on the frame the same as a gt lump as apposed to how flan did in the clio base.

20vt conversion a very easy docuememted conversion now so other than fabrication and few choice parts good to go

In the 5 you really want to stick to the 5 speed box due to limited space and further shortened custom shaft on pax side

Off top of my head have part numbers etc tucked away in conversion folder but to help you out you need as follows
5 speed box (bolt in shafts)
G60 smf / decent clutch to fit above
Seat ibiza manual arm for clutch realease which means you can retain r5 clutch cable or convert to hydraulic like Steve had in the clio
Custom drive shafts renault outer / vag inner
Custom rad
Custom charge cooler or I/C
Custom downpipe
Custom air filter / intake
Bigger fuel pump / vag fuel filter
Gear selector swap for vag item tweaked
Oem ecu with map on

Job done but you will VERY soon need
Lsd
Final drive change as too low geared for anything other than sprinting sure my calcs on 15's was a 3.3 vr6 fd whem I had diff fitted

I had custom suspension made based on car conversion, custom ap brakes etc but really depends on use.......still going strong in tue hands of jesus aka matty

Don't suppose you have a photos etc of the mounts etc I'm gonna get a donor car hopefully forged rods etc looking for around 300bhp

Yes full build pics but tbh its something you need to drop the engine and box in and measure. A few ways you could do and I would be tempted to fabricate a top mount section using the vw points

It was the golf cross member that was butchered and mated to the renault one. You need to loose a touch of front subframe so that needs strength putting back

Even things like the drawings for the shafts I had would be wrong if fitted slightly different so not really of use

yes I think I can remember you building it some years ago. I know what you mean drive shaft lengths etc I've got some what of a mental picture in my head of how to fit it in gearbox side
