Indeed, been in the 21 and on the hill the last two years, will go again this year, maybe have something a little different this time if they'll let me sneak a 2001 car in!

First guest car announced

Check out our first guest car announcement for The Gathering, built right here in the UK

On the surface this looks like a well screwed together Corolla, and it is certainly that. However its beauty is more than just skin deep. The entire build is track focussed, hillclimbs and sprints being the aim. Luckily for you we have a lovely hillclimb for him to show it all in action.

Mechanically the spec is ludicrous, taken back to a bare shell the suspension and handling components got a complete rebuild and re-engineering with the best of breed parts. Body work has been replaced with light weight components for weight saving. Engine wise this is now running a 20v black top 4A-GE, naturally aspirated and pushing out 217bhp through a Ford type 9 box. Combined with the weight saving and other performance parts this is a beast to be reckoned with on any hillclimb.

You can read the full details of the car here : www.speedhunters.com/2017/02/building-an-ae86-to-race/

We can't wait to get it to Shelsley Walsh on Sunday 20th August for it to attack the hill. Don't miss out.

Much more to come, but I'm pretty happy to be starting with this storage.proboards.com_forum_images_smiley_smiley.webp

Yes it is that time again track time at Retro Rides Gathering is now available

So if you want to apply for the hill you need to send an email to : [email protected]

With the following info
Name:
Details of your car: (type, modifications, anything interesting we should know)
Pictures of the car: (showing reg number)
Which session you want: Either Morning or Afternoon (can't do both)
Where you heard about the booking process: (eg RR Forum, Facebook, Instagram etc)

The rules
Hill time is £35 for either morning or afternoon session. You can't pre-book for both. You will require a show entry ticket storage.proboards.com_forum_images_smiley_smiley.webp

Vehicle must be Pre 1992*

On the day any driver will need to have with them
- Valid Driving licence (Photocard or old style Paper one)
- MOT (Unless exempt under UK requirements ie pre 1960)
- Insurance certificate or cover note

The requirement for MOT does not apply to continental registered cars – but they do need to bring their equivalent certificate

Helmets - Mandatory (please bring your own if you have one)
It's your head in it - if it's suitable for use on a motorcycle it's OK for this event - the hill is not timed or in any way a competition but we need to comply with shelsley requirements. Whilst there are a few helmets available for hire a fairly large deposit is required on the day so eliminate the need for all that by bringing you own helmet.

Vehicles can have one driver and one passenger – so two people max

No age or height restriction on passengers but they reserve the right to review this on the day and they must be wearing suitable seatbelts that fit properly.

Seat belts if fitted are to be worn.

Cars arriving on trailers require permission in advance – we have very limited space for trailers and quite frankly they are a PITA to deal with so don’t think we will automatically say yes to a trailered car – we won’t.

Confirmation of conditions – ie car entered is one that runs up the hill – no substitutions of a modern – this would result in a refund of your session cost (Please note a retro alternative would be acceptable)

Application Process

Apply by email (please note all emails will have a response within 48 hrs so please check your spam)

If accepted (we have limited spaces) then you will get a confirmation email with payment instructions – you will be given a specific payment Ref (we can take a variety of payment methods)

Once payment is accepted then closer to the date a pack will be sent out with detailed instructions on where to go on the morning of the show

We aim for you to get three runs up the hill, and in the past have been good at this (particularly at Shelsley), this is however time and attendee behavior conditioned. Morning and Afternoon sessions are the same length.

*Note: there is some wiggle room with this, cars that were being manufactured before 1992 as an example, so do your application if you think you can squeeze in and let us work out what fits on the hill storage.proboards.com_forum_images_smiley_smiley.webp

Time for our second Guest Car announcement, Ben Stapley's Janspeed 70's survivor is a true hill climb weapon and will be in action at Retro Rides Gathering on Sunday 20th August at Shelsley Walsh. We can't wait to see and hear it up the hill.

Sunday 20th August at Shelsley Walsh
Datsun 240Z
Ben Stapley

We first saw this car nearly ten years ago but then kind of lost track of it. When a friend emailed and said "I've got a good idea for a guest car" and attached a picture of this we knew it had to be done.

What you have here is a true survivor, built in the mid 70's to run in the European Group 5 Sports Car Championship. It was built and run by Janspeed, mainly in the Nederlands driven by Han Tjan. Janspeed at the time experimented with a turbo to try to gain more power. It was never raced in turbo form as it kept blowing the head gaskets in practice so always raced normally aspirated.

Ben bought it in 1996 as a rolling shell with a blown engine and no gearbox and he mainly at Gurston Down hillclimb to settle in before heading into the Midland Speed Championship and some rounds of the British Sprint Championship. The body shell had suffered from some rust and various visits to the scenery over its life. The battle scars are still evident on the shell and will stay as they help to tell the story of the car.

Whilst the car has been in development it has tried to keep the heart and soul of the car in the 70’s.

The original engine was rebuilt and is now running 3057cc. To start with it ran on the triple 48 Webers that were used in the 70’s before Janspeed put a mechanical injection system and slide throttle on. The slide throttle is still on now but it gained some engine management to make it more tractable for the narrow hill climbs and also in the wet. The wheels have been reduced in width by 2 inches as tyres technology has moved on so much the original 15inch rears and 13 inch fronts created so much rolling resistance. The front airdam has been modified to include a splitter to take on the advances in aero that have been made.

Spec
3.1ltr straight 6 cylinder Nissan engine running DTA ECU with slide throttle, multi point injection and coil on plug ignition running around 220 ft/lb torque and 270 bhp. Mapping done by Circuit Motors at Castle Combe.
Nissan SX gearbox
AP racing 4 pot callipers all round
Nissan diff with Lsd
Steel shell with Fibreglass arches and front wings built by Janspeed
Avon hill climb slicks on 3 piece Ali rims

Whilst Ben occasionally gets to drive it his daughters Hannah and Steph have now taken over driving the car at hills and sprints. Expect them all to take a turn up the hill at Shelsley Walsh on Sunday 20th August for Retro Rides Gathering 201718767727_10154728495681378_7082808491376601267_n.webp 18814301_10154728495721378_8960058076484941960_n.webp 18839298_10154728495686378_4495503089024599099_n.webp

Renault 5 GT Hillclimber
Martyn Ferris
We like to give a slice of British hillclimbing each year at The Gathering to encourage people to go and check it out or better yet compete. For the past few years we've had the guys and girls of the Welsh Sprint and Hillclimb Championship with a stand at the event to show off their series. This year they get to do it on the hill with Martyn Ferris taking his excellent Renault 5 up for your entertainment.
Expect to see some three wheel action around the Esses as this ferocious slice of gallic hot hatchery gives it beans up the hill. It may not be a thousand brake horse power fire breathing beast, but that is just the point, in capable hands, small, light and balanced will win the day. That having been said when in action this makes all the right noises.
Look out for Martyn in the paddock and the other representation of the Welsh Sprint and Hillclimb Championship, you may be surprised at how easy it is to get involved. In the meantime enjoy this short video of him three wheeling through the Llandow chicane : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrJS72h0bV4
