1980 R5 Gordini re-build

Hi
I am now looking to re-start rebuilding my 1980 R5 Gordini which I have owned from 1989. I started restoration work in 1992 and then turned into a major rebuild which is still on going. I have used two and a half R5 for the spares including one 1979 Gordini and will also be breaking my R5 TX for the engine, seats and other parts to help with my rebuild but will need to buy a number of new parts if I can find them so I may need to post a list to the forum of the bits I can not find through out the coming year, I very much hope to be finished by the end of next year.
I will also post more photos when I can of the rebuild.

Cheers
Geoff

If you are breaking a TX don't throw the carburettor away. Mine has an unfathomable blockage in the secondary somewhere and I'm at the point of throwing a R5G carb on just to make sure that is the trouble. Was your TX one of the 4 on the road or one of the 4 on SORN?

Looking forward to pictures of the rebuild.

Malcolm, over here I've used a chemical called carbi-solve it was a fairly aggressive cleaner, you have to remove all the nylon bushes and plastic parts and diagphrams etc, and suspend it in the solution over night. It worked very very well. Sorry cant help with an exact name of the product, it came in 20 ltr drums and it stang the shit out of your hands if you didn't wash it off! May be worth a try if you can get hold of it there. And no,, it's not your regularly carbi cleaner!!!

Hi Malcolm
Am not looking at scraping too much from the old TX and may try selling some parts and will post a list later of spares I have to sell which will be open to offers + post.
If you are interested in the carb it is in working condition and I run up the engine now and again to keep it all in good order.
The car is not on the UK register because I live in Guernsey, Channel Islands and may well be the last R5 and TX still here, I also have the very last R5 Gordini in the island to.
Am not looking at doing the engine change over until later next year but will look and removing the engine from the car around late Feb so the carb maybe available around then and I can let you know when ready to send if you wish.

Cheers
Geoff

I took my first Le Car 2 turbo to Guernsey in the late 80s. Lost count how many times I have been over now to see family and friends.
Love the place, last went 2 yrs ago and what a change, too many cars and lots of 4X4 and other too big cars fot those road,
Went this time to Saumarez Park, round the back from the house
the is a field next to tthe garden and I saw alot of old cars in there, I remember alot of 205s being there not sure what else.

Hi
So glad you love Guernsey but your right about the traffic on the roads here. when started out on the roads on motor bikes in 1979 there was around 25000 cars and most of them were small ones. I got my first 1976 R5 TL in 1983 and was easy to drive in the traffic but now I have to drive a large Transit van for work and now with more than 55000 cars on the roads is a laugh on a Island 25 mile square.
Cheers
Geoff

Geoff,

I have been through the ringer with my rebuild and still not ready for painting yet! Give me a shout if you want any parts advice but you appeared to have it covered with a few spare shells. I should have bought one at the start of my project rather than half way through it would have saved me a few tears!

gt turbo guys use a vinegar bath for 10mins, as the carb body on the solex is magnesium alloy. I don't know if the twin choke is made from the same stuff, but might be worth a try. it has a very vigorous reaction....bubbles, vapour,r the lot!
