5 Mk I incl Gordini 1980 G5 Atmo. A Few Questions Before I Buy

Hi all,

I've seen a G5 advertised locally (ish) and wonder if it is worth the effort. It gets extremely hot here and ordinarily I would go for a car with A/C. So I would restore this car with a view to saving it and selling it on, or if there's a few quid in it, sell it as it is.

I don't want to get stuck with a car I cannot get parts for. Are parts available? I noticed that the plastic vent trim up the rear quarter is broken. Plus there are a few small pieces missing. The grommet around the door button for one.

When looking at the picture of the interior it looks like it has been changed as there are signs of red on a rear side panel. Would a black interior with a grey block pattern have been found in a Gordini?

It was originally black, so I'll need the pinstripe after I paint it. Are the graphics still available or do I get one made up?

Is the 'Gordini' badge available for the tailgate?

Others opinions would be greatly appreciated.

What are they really worth? Not the £10k someone is asking for a Turbo on Ebay I'm sure. If this thing will only ever be worth a grand then I won't bother. I believe it's more rare than a Turbo. Does that make it more valuable? I can't seem to find much about these cars. It's always the Turbo.

If someone wants it, I would help with shipping it to the UK. All the best,

Prices certainly have increased, the NA Gordini is rarer than the Turbo, you would hope coming from Cyprus there would not be too much rust? The body parts and mechanics can all be sourced, looks as if most original parts are still present, however it will the severity of the rust that makes the difference if the project is financially viable. Check the front chassis legs, rear quarters, sills, rear strut turrets, rear valence, door posts and front inner wing. Not seen that interior before, the seats look original though. The interior colour for black cars, sand, grey and red were all options. If you want to keep the car, I am sure you could keep it a while and still get your money back, but for a quick turn around from the little I can see its worth 2-3k as is, assuming the engine runs?

more infor here....

Looks good. Mine was in a far worse state. I'm still restoring mine and with out the guys on here i wouldn't of been able to source all the parts I required but now I'm 90% there. Just a few niggly bits needed but not impossible to find.
Think you should have a good look over it then jump in and get it. Prices are only going up

Nice info people. Thank you. The more I think about it, the more I want it.

And based on what you've said I'll call him tomorrow and get to see it if its still available.

I've put off buying various cars in the past few years and lost out on some good ones. This one I'll go for. It only got advertised a few days ago so should still be there.

I did my apprenticeship as a mechanic for Renault in 1985 so it will be memories of a good time in my life. I don't recall working on a normally aspirated G5 though.

I'll let you know what happens.

All the best,

Derek

Derek,

Bought my Atmo in January and I can tell you parts are awkward, if not difficult, to find but this club has been very helpful! I have a few spares that came with the car so drop me a line if you need anything in particular.

Cheers Garry

Hi , never seen that check interior before , and ive had more than a few over the past 30 years , great cars , if the shell is rotten , find another rust free shell , they are about in auto guise and with very few mods can be used , if i didnt have too many cars i would buy it !!!
