I've been offered by the chief mechanic for Renault in Peterborough mine for £500 as he wants a private job to do in his own time.
He will still stamp my book etc, and has told me it's a 4 hour job tops? and he's done a few before (used to be 2 or 3 kicking around Peterborough so likely)
All sounds good but I thought it was a longer job than that?
Also means all bits bought for my car will all be on trade price
£500 is a decent price. Imo £800 is a ridiculous price to pay for a cambelt change. I'd say £500-£600 tops and that's all I want/can pay for mine so let me know if it goes through and he'll do another one.
As for parts, I can get all the service parts myself for £230+VAT (not waterpump got told that was around £80+VAT) from a friend at Renualt and thats not trade price I don't think, i'd have thought this chief mechanic would get them even cheaper?
Surely if my book is stamped by Renault though and it causes grief i'll be ok to take it back to a dealer and say sort it?
Matt paid £400 labour for mine and I think the parts were around £300 as John says. I can't see how you can get it cheaper than that without cutting corners...
What you have to remember he will probley have a helper and I know when doing a private jobs you dont stop until the jobs complete (its your time not works).
I would say with all the right tools and experiance its possible and the parts should not be silly money as the same 406 v6 engine cambelt kit is £75 plus VAT.
Camden Renault in Northampton advertise all service and cambelt change prices on a notice board in the service reception they list the v6 laguna at £499 plus VAT. They say its a 7 hour job to do and they charge nearly a £100 plus VAT an hour. So they must have a fixed price for some stuff and it also tells me that the KIT is not £450 which they quote for the V6 Clio.
The feeling I have is that they know that most people dont have the technical know how and there for can right royaly shaft us.
They do the same when it comes to all the special stuff they do the Turbos and Alpines all silly money.
What some one needs is all the part numbers for bits that are used from the standard car range and then we can save a fortune.
I heard a story that the part code is different for the clio bonnet from the V6 one which is the same yet they charge more fot the V6 one (funny that)
I have the receipts here for the parts at trade prices and it's about £300 including the water pump.
Are you sure the 406 V6 cambelt kit is only £75? Inc all the variators and rollers? Because the local Pug garage quoted my brother a good wedge more than that...
I havent ordered and confirmed but they quoted £35 for the belts and £75 for the kit. (Northampton branch) Although I think you need two kits so £150.
However I will be checking because I intend to get a kit from them and see. But I still dont think you really need to do all the rollers and pullys and pump as most of the Clios are only around 30k on them and would think that the second change would be good idea to do all.
I am going to do my own when I can clear my garage out, so I will have a good idea on the time is takes. I will be removing the engine and box as I am fitting a Mk2 box in place.
I have all the renault approved tools Hammer, Crow Bar, Big flat blade driver and lots of sticky tape LOL.
Sounds like the £230 I got told would be trade then as was stated, as the £230 didn't include a water pump I got told that was going to be around £75-£85.
So £500 could be right though, I mean it's a private job.
If it takes 7 hours thats still £200 he'll be making and something tells me a Renault Chief mechanic doesn't usually earn that in a day - £28 an hour that would earn him around £60k a year.
My local one (Renault Romford) wanted £1200 just for the belt alone
They said that the water pump would be £300 on top [smilie=shock.gif]
Hmm, like i'm taking it there (I some how think that they didn't particularly want to work on it anyway) Plus they'd probably screw it up anyway.
If anyone local to essex has been given a good price by a reputable garage/specialist please let me know.
I'm going to give Mark Fish a call when I get chance & see what he says.
