Iam about to fit 4 new tyre to my MK1. What width can i go up to on the rears and will i need to change profile as well? I was thinking 255 on rear. Is it also possible to go wider on the front? Again would the profile need to change?

This link will take you to a tyre size calculator that allows you to work out the various combinations of tyres e.g.

How big for a certain rim size
How big when upsizing to keep the rolling radius as near as possible to original
etc etc

http://www.tyresite.com/tyrecalc.asp

Toyo's own website also contains a similar, although not as comprehensize tool.

Thanks for that guys. If i go 255 on the rear and 225 on the front will it have an adverse affect on the way the car drives?

Hmm it depends really...

More grip = yes

Potentially higher risk of aquaplaning = yes
Potential difference between actual speed and indicated speed = yes
Potential impact to ride height = yes (this last one may not sound that significant but a dramatic change in the ride height balance could see you driving around with either neutral or nose high rake to the car which will give you undesirable lift at speed)

Having said that Tim, if I remember rightly, uses this combination and he seems fine :-)

I'm going to 215/45 front and 245/40 rears - I use my car mainly on track and the benefit of more grip and KW v3 adjustable suspension is worth the other potential issues
