I have been perplexed by what the hell this is for! Its under the front plastic compartment on the passenger side. There are two wires that leave it that join the loom but I just can't figure out what its use is...
It might be an engine kill switch with the engine being in the back of the car. I'd be interested to know, my Mk2 hasn't got one as far as I know ... Do all Mk1's have them ?
Its a fuel cut off switch as far as I know in case of a severe accident - would suggest not to touch it cos could mean a trip to the stealers to reactivate it!
The system is intented to disable the fuel supply in the event of a frontal impact. Providing all the conditions are met (it's safe to do so) this can be used to enable it again.

Jackies old Pug 406 had one and it popped after we slammed the door too hard!!! AA man showed us where and what it was for! It just pops after a hard knock and kills the fuel system; you press the rubber top to reset it, Zimple.
Interesting because I seem to remember most EFI cars have a fuel cut-off device somewhere but most are hidden in the bowls of the vehicle from memory and not a huge red button which is shouting 'press me'.
the red cover bit was missing on mine, so i ordered a new one (complete switch) due to the fairly cheap price, around £9 and fast delivery from the stealers I think its a fairly common renault part.
It should cut the engine if you give it a thump on the side of the switch with a ratchet or heavyish spanner. Once the engine dies just press the switch down on the top like Wongy says and it will start.
Renault have had them for a while. I remember them when i worked at Renault in '99.
Just give it a try Grant and if it doesn't work the email me and i won't get back to you
