Vee not as hot as it used to be!

Quite literally. The temp needle of my vee used to go up to where a 9 would be on a clock. It now only seems to go up to 8 and sits there. It seems to talk a bit longer to get there than it used to as well and only goes to 9 of driven hard or sat in traffic. Performance of car seems fine and apart from the needle theres no difference to the feel of the car.

Should I be worried? Or are things maybe a little more efficient as a result of the recent cambelt change?
 
I know its a different bird altogether, but my 850-R Volvo did the same and when I had the ECU uprated, I was strongly advised to change the Thermostat. I changed it and it returned to normal. Hope this helps buddy.
 
Mine used to do that, i only really noticed it more when the weather turned cooler, the thermostat was stuck open so consequently any heat generated by the engine was immediately cooled through the rad, changed the stat and everything fine now.
 
It could well be your thermostat letting you know its getting abit tired due to it not letting as much water through,

Or it could be the other way around....

It may of got more efficient because the waterpump might of being changed at the same time when the cambelt was done, Also the thermostat might of been changed too,

If the waterpump and stat have both been done then personally i'd say its circulating the water better hence the drop in temp,
 
Perhaps fresh anti-freeze is helping too.

Mine had this temp issue and the engine temps were tested which found the gauge was reading less than the "real" temp.
 
mine previously sat at 9 o clock but about a year ago it has sat at max of 8 o clock, also on very cold days the faster i drive the colder the cabin gets and then warms up once i hit traffic! :s
never had it looked at as it hasnt seemed to effect performance.
 
My thermostat is completely useless at the moment gonna get it changed soon. Takes forever for the engine to warm up and fuel consumption mpg is down by about 15% :( Hopefully Ben ;) @ Angleworks will sort it out for me.
 
Thanks James. I still wont do it myself as I am rubbish on the technical side of things with cars! Barely able to change a light bulb! :rofl: I can change a wheel though, shame the vee dont carry a spare one, I think the boot is too small ;) Baseline what are you gonna do?
 
Thermostats are fairly important simply because you have a huge energy reserve in the massive cooling system, so if it sticks open then its just never going to warm up properly.

Ruins fuel economy.
 
I also would expect something to do with optimum temperature for the oil to be working properly. Just a guess though.
 
Basically from what I understand/been told if the thermostat is fully open and keeps the engine cold the car chucks in more petrol to raise the engine temp but no performance gains achieved just wasting petrol hence increased consumption and less mpgs.
 
All engines are simply calibrated to work within a certain optimum operating window, and outside of this window the calibration is altered using compensation values. A colder engine will require more fuel or lower AFR's to not just warm up, but to run smoother without missfire or hesitation.
