Valeo starter motor

Hi guys, think I'm going to need a new starter motor. Have fully charged the Varta battery, car will start ok and then have driven 25 odd miles, stopped and then tried to start again with no luck, very slow turnover. Alternator is fine, had the battery checked and all is good there and have been advised it will probably be a starter motor issue.
Have had a good search of the many threads which have been very useful but just have one question regarding the Valeo starter part numbers. Looking at the online Valeo catalogue the new part number for the mk2 is 438011 and the exchange part number 455734. I can't see any reference to these part numbers only to the mk1 part numbers 438087 new and 455956 exchange. The mk2 starter is heavier 3.9kg v 3.1kg and is more powerful, Rated Power [kW]: 1,5 v 1,3. I'm going to go for the mk2 455734 exch unit at £126.49 delivered but just wanted to check I wasnt missing something as I can only see referrals to the mk1 starter part number which I'm surprised about. Cheers

How old is the existing battery?

It's a Varta Silver Dynamic 100 Battery (E38) which replaced the original 2.5 years ago. I went to Anglia Autostore in Leigh On Sea to get the battery checked as they are a Varta stockist on the Varta website so thought if there was a battery issue that they would exchange it there and then under guarantee but after a quick test they said the battery is 100% ok.

The Renault part number is 7711134302 (exchange unit), as supplied by Renault Parts Direct in October 2014.

Just had a proper diagnostic test of the battery, starter and alternator and it looks like the battery is at fault after all. Called Anglia Autostore and apparently their Bosch testing machine was away being repaired when I visited them so they could only do a basic test. Will pop down their again on Monday and see if I can get anywhere regarding replacement under warranty.

Completely agree with you! I think any car with a big electrical load is lucky to get 3 years out of a battery. Used to have a Cossie and it was exactly the same. 3 years was the max a battery would go for before giving up the ghost, usually with no warning whatsoever. That's why I always kept the receipt safe !)

So I today returned to Anglia Autostore and they tested the battery with their Bosch machine and frustratingly it came back as all ok. They then tried a brand new Yuasa battery and the car struggled to start in the same way as the Varta. Have now booked the car into a local garage who I trust to try and get to the bottom of the problem.

I hear your pain!!!

Starter motor problems are becoming a common ailment. I think fuel pump issues are another that is becoming more frequent.
Spike has some ideas about fuel pump upgrade if it comes to that...

I put a new one in mine last year after it desided not to start.it had been playing up for a while and really sluggish turning over .i bought a new one from Renault they have changed it slightly it must have been a fault with it .i decided to do the job myself was not to bad to do I did it over a few nights but when I fired it up the difference in the turnover speed was amazing .

What I have noticed about the battery/starter on my ph1 is that if it turned over slowly a few times it was the battery but if it just turned over 1 or 2 times it was the starter, also when the starter was playing up if I kept trying it would eventually start if it didn't kill the battery first.

Also I only live a mile away from that Kwik Fit in Billericay :)

Dodgy starter makes the battery look faulty ... A new battery can also mask the issue but a new battery and decent starter should wiz the engine over no problems. The starter magnets can become debonded over time which reduces the efficiency of the starter and causes drag, this exposes weak batteries which can't overcome these issues.

Cheers guys, all interesting points, I'm leaning back towards the starter as the problem, hopefully will find out once and for all tomorrow.

Dal, did I not deliver some food to your house roughly a year ago, we had a chat and I told you I had a V6 too?!

Agreed. Couldn't believe how fast mine fired up with a new starter!

Yes you did, I thought it maybe you and only thought this morning that you mentioned the Noble.

Apart from the starter problems I hope alls well mate.

Just to update, starter indeed was the culprit. Ordered from RPD, fitted by local garage, all in cost £326. What a transformation!
