V6 purchase maybe

Hi all. I'm new to here so trying to find my way around. I'm currently looking to purchase a phase 1. But not sure if the price is rite for one of these. It's a 002 pre production car. But needs a fair bit of work. Its been stood since 2012 so it will need cambelt and the brakes going over for mot...Plus probably other things. It also needs a full repaint as the kit has some cracks and clear coat peel. It also has a engine fault with a missfire. He is asking 18k with 44000 on the clock with not much history. He is a really nice guy and told me everything but would 18 be the going rate for something in this condition. There is nothing really out there for my budget of 18 so do I just go for it... I just don't know

It sounds an interesting car with it’s pre prod history, but you would be wise to budget 5-10k for all that work. Fine because you could do it slowly over time, but it would make it a pretty strongly priced phase 1.

The last three phase 1 sales I noted were between 17-20k if that helps with establishing value. The 20k car was on the button with cambelt done.

There are not many phase 1s about but market rate seems to be around 20-23k for a sorted car. (A 24k miles car auctioned recently failed to hit reserve reaching 18k).

A side note is the car isn’t a production car and doesn’t carry a production chassis number it doesn’t have type approval. I believe that it’s fine in this country, but you may find it couldn’t be road registered in most other countries if you came to sell it (certainly not France). In France the pre prod phase 1 cars sell for about 10k less than production cars.

I have been and seen this car 2.5 years ago and needed a fair bit of work then and in the end bought another car as it worked out a fair bit cheaper than buying and restoring that car. It’s a shame it’s been stood so long and I still can’t understand why he didn’t just take it to Scott to get sorted then sell it for decent money. Would make a lovely car with an interesting history Once restored.
