TYRES AND HANDLING

Just bought a p1 after losing my deposit 6 years ago due to business grief etc, it doesnt handle like the cars we drove at mira all those years ago! It pulls straight, brakes hands off straight as the test cars , but on the motorway at anything over 60mph it tracks all over the place. Follows the road contours, cambers, joins in the tarmac etc. Hard work to keep it straight, probably looks like i,ve had a drink from behind. It has a mix of tyres, bf goodrich on the front and n7000 nexus on the rear?? I haven't had a 4 wheel alignment done yet but will next week. Has anyone had anything similar, are there any bushes that wear that might cause it?? all advice welcome please..

Mine is the same mate, i was dieing to ask the question but a bit afraid i was asking to much lol.

my front tyres are unknow (infinity) and avons on the rear but they are all new so dont wanna change yet.

But i really wanna tighten up the front end. I do find anything over 70 and iam hanging on to dear life, nearly tracked into the center res on the m25.

I'm no expert but I would get a full set of OE Michelins on there and have the geometry/alignment done to start with.

tried 'loose subframe' and it only finds this thread. I will have the car in the air and check though as the p1 rear has been changed to a p2. I would be interested to know what the best geometry set up is though? I searched ' handling ' and there is mention of a thread with details of the set up, not interested in fast road with understeer, would rather have full control of the front end but not the twitchy thing i have now. At 30 round a roundabout if i lift it wants to swap ends and squeels the back tyres. Need to get it set up i think before it becomes a statistic.

Hey dude, just had a belt done and mine does exact the same. A real worry (didnt do it before) Im gonna get it into a place and get the tracking done. may be common if you mess with the backend too much! Has yours had a belt?

hi by the way :)

My guess, rearwheel alignment, or the rear turnlinkeage, or how you call it.
Different tires front and rear doesn't help either.

Sounds like rear wheel alignment. :approve:

thanks for all your replies , i have asked sg if he can send me the set up details, i will have elite in essex do the alignment unless you guys know of any one reliable in the north kent area.

Question does that mean if you have a cambelt change and so engine out and back in that you need to do a re-alignment?

Yes, because you removed the subframe to do it. ALLWAYS do a re-alignment, if you touch anything where the wheels attach to. NO QUESTION

Ok thanks Harry

The Renault dealer didn't tell me that!

Plus I've been driving round for a year without having the re-alignment done but didn't notice any severe tyre wear / handling problems.

Will get it checked

Every decent tireshop has a laseralignment bench. But try to find a shop where the guy also does racecars, then he probably knows the job. Other people on here might know some people.

how much is the re alinment ? will renault do this ?

I negotiated a special rate for any Vee owner off V6Clio.net at Demon Tweeks in Wrexham (near Chester) for alignment/tracking. A fair few of us of here have taken ours there. I can't quite remember your location Jon, in terms of whether Wrexham would work for you...but Craig is your man to ask for, his direct dial at DT is 01978-663056

(tell him Jainy recommended you from V6 forum and he'll double the price...!! :D LOL! Just joking, he will put it through at the special rate..!)

Hope you get it sorted Jon

Jainy
:D

thanks jainy, i think that will be a day trip to get it done but a fun ride never the less, would he be able to check the subframe is tight? as id struggle to get under to check :(

any rough price for the alinment as well? could sombody maybe pm me?
