Simon, this could occur if one or more of the fuel injectors is continuosly open - I have experienced the same symptoms before but on other cars with a Bosch L Jetronic parallel injection system - obviously the Vee system is a sequential injection Bosch Motronic system, which is much more sophisticated ... I suppose you could test by circuit testing each injector but would have expected an ECU error code ... I would also imagine each bank of injectors has some common circuitry so it could be an issue with groups of 3 injectors ...
Another thing to check would be fuel pressure. Check the fuel pressure regulator or return hose to ensure fuel is returning to teh tank and not causing excessive fuel pressure and therefore severely enriched injection pulses, resulting in overfueling.
The big issue is that it runs bigger injectors and needs a remap, I have no return fuel feed but talking with Scott they dont need the return. On the Mk 1 there is no return it uses the two outputs one for each of the rails, the Mk2 has a link loop between the two rails.
I did try the smaller injectors in the car but it would not rev up, which I assume is because they fire further up the inlet on the development unit. I will check that the injectors arnt sticking though I also feel it may be a good idea to clean the smaller ones and try them again as they had been sitting for a year.
There must be some way of modulating fuel pressure though Simon - is there a pressure relief valve in the main fuel feed somewhere then ? Should have a vacuum feed to it also ...
Just as a check, the fuel pressure should be 4 bar +/- 0.2 bar.
I wouldn't have thought the positioning of the injector would have stopped the engine working as long as the fuel was being injected into the air-flow - in either case I would guess the injectors are still be pretty close to the valve head ? Might be worth trying them again
Also might be worth checking to make sure they aren't leaking when the engine if off and therefore dumping the fuel from the fuel rail into the cylinders and seaping past the rings down into the sump while the car is stood.
Some good ideas Martin, the main issue at the moment is getting the engine flushed out. It runs real bad at the moment the oil stinks and is really thin. Gets very top end tappy as it gets warmer but reves past the noise.
I hope that I can get it running nice again as before this problem it was running well, it also has a fair bit of shit in the oil breather pipe and the oil engine cap has it too. Its like yellow butter, I think the cause is the damp and condensation and the fact I used a gas heater in the garage, as there is no water contamination in the oil just fuel.
