Trip computer problem......

Splat

New Member
Coil number 6 (as defined here: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=10718) failed on Wednesday . It took about five minutes to diagnose, trace and replace (my last vehicle was the L7X engined Avantime!) and the ECU light self-extinguished after about 120 miles. All normal so far..........

However, concurrent with the coil failure (which I had to drive with for about 10 miles before I could safely effect a repair) all of the trip computer functions associated with fuel consumption (mpg - range - consumption) have also failed, to be replaced with flashing dashes. My thinking is that these functions are metered at the number six cylinder, and the coil failure caused their loss. But they haven't returned after 250 miles.

Has anybody else experienced this problem? And if so, what's the fix?

Simon

ps: Yes, all you hoarders of garage queens; I've covered 250 miles in two days in a V. This is normal. Evil, aren't I?

So Simon, you could ...

(a) take your Vee to a dealer who might tell you that there's a dash circuit board problem and charge you to replace the whole lot, as has been known to happen or ...
(b) take full advantage of your membership of the awesome v6clio.net and follow the instructions here to reset your dash.

I'd go for (b) personally ;).

Or Splat, it might your battery going. I've had it on my 182!!!! Flashing, not remembering etc. Voltage drop problem to me ;) turning the car over takes all the juice and throws the dash!!!!
Might be wrong but sounds familiar.

Thank you, both. I love these owners forums. Somebody always knows the answer, and everybody is always so helpful. I've executed the reset and I'm off to work in a couple of minutes. We'll see.... If not, then the battery is of unknown provenance, so I'll try that next. I'll let you know!

The reset did the trick.

My thinking is that the fuel flow is metered at one of the cylinders and this figure is then used by the trip computer. When that particular coil fails the ECU shuts down the fuel flow to that cylinder to avoid damage (bore wash, cat. contamination, detonation in the exhaust). Thus the trip computer registers an error. This will only be the case for the one coil (6?). Can the very good guide on coil failures in the Knowledge be edited to mention this possibility, with a link to the dash reset guide included?
