Timing belt change.

V6 Driver

Hi Guys,

I'm about to commence my timing belt change and will be carrying the work out myself. Is it definitely an engine out job. Some people have told me otherwise but I'm not sure I believe them! I'm guessing that it is and if so I will do the clutch and anything else I can think of whilst it's out.

I've seen the Wiki guide to taking the engine out of a Vee, is this the best way? Anyone know any good tricks to make life a little easier? I appreciate it's going to be a lot of work but all advice gladly received!

Is the Renault timing belt kit the best way to go?

Also, is the OEM fit clutch the way to go or has anyone tried an uprated clutch?

you will need to regas the air con...replenish coolant...renew the gearbox oil...renew the brake fluid... if you do it with the engine out.

THIS IS NOT A DIY JOB!!

if you are experienced in motor mechanics then fair enough.
 
I'm in the trade and have worked on a lot of mid-engined stuff in the past so that will be ok. Was just wondering if anyone who had done it themselves knew any helpful tips!

Even though I have not done the cam-belt myself I would agree with Clarkie ...

You have to ask yourself the questions what is your time worth, have you got access to the special tools required, are your facilities and tools up to the job and are you prepared to take the risk ?

If this is your bag and all the above is OK then that's fine but the rates which are charged by Clarkie, for example, would easily stop me from attempting it myself - for me and most it's just not worth it even if it is possible.

I would say a clutch replacement would be a good option too aswell as the water pump - whilst the engine is out. As John says there are lots of threads and he has started you off.

Good luck though if you do attempt it - keep us posted.

£1000.00 inc VAT is the price now... sounds a lot but its a lot of parts...and bloody hard work!! [smilie=icon_clown.gif]

It sounds very reasonable to me. You already loose easy a few hours with the exhaust tubes. The total IDIOT, yes you read it right, who designed it with tapped holes in the flange connections, aaaaarrrgggghhh.

Apart from a lift, you would also need a special tool to support the engine and gearbox, so you can lift the car when the engine and gearbox are disconected from the shell. I made one myself the first time constructed out of plywood with four turnable wheels, so it's more easy to reposition it when you want to re-assemble (?) the stuff.
For the timingbeltchange you only need 4 8mm drillbits to lock the pullys.

Generally, I did it because I like to do it, and have all the equipment to do it, including a lift. And as said, the rate which clarky uses, it isn't worth it doing it yourself. It will take you at least 16 hours the first time. Only do it if you got the equipment, the time and the joy to do it.
 
I have mine stripped and ready to drop out, I have already changed the belt on the engine thats going in pretty straight forward. I found marking it all with tipex a good idea to get it back in the same place,I borrowed a timing belt tension gauge from a mate. For moving it about and lifting the car about I use a pallet truck and blocks to get the arse up enough, and Makro were doing motercycle lifts for £40 just the job even has wheels to move it out just need to get the balance right.

I must admit I have a little bit of experiance removing and refitting engines which I suppose helps, I would prefer to have a nice well lit heated workshop not a cold damp garage.

The bigest problem I have is the cash needed to pay someone to do it would pay my insurance and tax so I have no option.

Although if I had the money it would be with SG and not where near RENAULT.
 
SG did mine. Scott does a stunning job with very good prices. As he has done with all the jobs and bits he has supplied to me. Scotts is 160 mile each way from my house and my car has been to him a few times now. This is how highly I rate of him. Never trusted the main stealers.
