The scum get everywhere - cautionary tale if you're selling a car or parts

The scum get everywhere these days ......just read on Clio Williams site.
Someone was selling a Williams 1 that was in bits and stored in a garage.

" I arranged collection of this car today and when the owner turned up at his lock up he found that a thieving piece of scum had broken into the garage and stolen the engine and gear box plus trim parts rendering the car of no use to me and causing major upset for the seller. He had shown one person the car and no doubt it was this low life who went back later to steal the parts.
So a word of caution if you show anyone your car/parts for sale ask them for ID and take a sneaky pic of them and the vehicle they turn up in."

So now we are reduced to taking pics of people and their car regs who only come to look, in case they are sussing it out to steal. No doubt withheld their number or used a pay as you go phone to make the appointment [smilie=icon_eek.gif] :(

That is a disturbing story. From now on, I will only meet at a public place a few minutes away when selling a car!

I hope that thief will be caught.

I recall a chap selling his Vee and insisted it would not be sold from his home address. Many buyers get the hump with this idea!

Always a problem knowing how to deal with selling stuff, I give a nearby postcode when asked for location, always write down the reg. no. of the vehicle they turn up in but at some point you have to trust each other. I would never buy something from someone I had to meet in a car park so wouldn't expect anyone to buy from me without viewing at my home or business address. Security at home or business is easier than at a lock up although these days there are many devices that can monitor remotely. I always make a return contact via phone and email when arranging a viewing. Then hope for the best remembering most people are honest !

I've sold a lot of stuff from my garage and it is always a worry when buyers collect but I will only let them in if I've spoken to them first and they sound decent. Any sign of dodgyness and I'll just make the effort to remove the item from the garage first. Hopefully the little shit gets caught.

Bought mine without seeing it or even speaking to the previous owner. As far as I was aware, he had some very special machinery so I was pretty respectful and appreciated he wouldn't want people around. Also helped having a VERY trust worthy middle man that both seller and buyer could rely on!(Scott)

That is atrocious!

Indeed, hope this low life is caught, and sooner rather than later.........feel for seller, and the prospective buyer.

Always sold my cars from my work premises, which I am lucky to be able to do. It is a sad state of affairs. Heard a story on the Audi forum of a chap selling his RS4, on the test drive with the proposed buyer he pulled over attacked the owner and drove off with the car!!

Sadly happened to me a few years back.. was selling a mint Audi Quattro UR turbo, (for 7k !! Those were the days !!) it was only after it disappeared off my drive 3 days after a never to be head of again caller had enquired about the car (and what security was on it ! Doh !!) and asked for my address to view that I realised what I had done... caller : “any alarm fitted ?” Me naively : “No”... so now if I sell a car from home it is stored offsite with disk lock fitted while I am going through the selling process.

I remember a story about a guy selling a Boxster and the perspective buyer was out for a test drive with the owner in the passenger seat, as they pulled up to park at the end of the test, the buyer said to the owner did he want to park it up so as not to curb the wheels etc. As the owner jumped out the passenger seat to go round to park it, the guy drove off!
