the clio has eaten the clutch!

moved my car last night and the clutch went i think! i can get no gears whatsoever!! just what i need the week before xmas.

where is the best place to get a new one from? im absolutly fuming to be honest! losing my patience very fast with this car!

Can you select gears? Doesn't sound likely to be the clutch if it's gone just like that with no warning.
Brett had a similar problem earlier this year, it was clutch cable related iirc.

yeah no warning what so ever, just pulled out of the junction and it span up then ...no gears! no i cant select any gears whatsoever

can you select gears when the car is turned of ?? if so the gearbox is ok, also get some one to move the gear stick while you look in the engine bay and see if you can see movement.

it goes into gears fine when the engine is not running. when it is running it will not go into any gears

From the various descriptions. this thread was confusing ... but based on your final post ... possible causes could be ...

Clutch pedal/reservoir/slave cylinder - in which case you may not be able to engage gears as the clutch will not operate to disengage the engine from gearbox. If the engine is running then you won't be able to engage gears ... If the engine is stopped, you should be able to engage gears (providing the linkage is working) but shouldn't try and start the car in gear for obviousl reasons.

Some of us have had similar issues with low fluid levels in the reservoir as this is shared with the braking system ... as the brake pads wear, the fluid level can drop below the feed to the clutch circuit ...

Also take off the covers and check the hydraulic pipe that goes into the top of the box they are known to leak or fail meaning when you press the pedal the clutch won't work - I know cos I replaced mine last year

Do you have any presure on the clutch pedal, if not its proberly a fluid problem.

If its the slave cylinder leaking its a gearbox off job as its in the bellhousing [smilie=icon_cry.gif] check to see if fliud is dripping out the bottom of the bellhousing

The Clutch fluid is fed by the the brake fuild bottle so check that the level has not dropped, if its below the black pipe outlet on the side of the bottle its a leak in the clutch pipe or cylinders.

It would be very strange to see the clutch just let go.

I'll put money on it being the slave cylinder mate. To start with it might be worth bleeding it. Its a long shot but maybe, some how, air may have appeared in the line. Easiest and quickest way by a country mile to do this is by using an Easybleed.

If it turns out to be the cylinder, remove the rear subframe, disconnect the fly wheel sensor, undo all the bolts on the bell housing, drop the left hand gearbox mount, leave the engine completly alone and then the crappy PK6 'box will fall free. Then its a very simple job to change the broken part weather it be clutch or cylinder.

When i killed a clutch ages ago i had the same symptoms.

But that was after heavy use.

just started it to see if i could see anything wrong and it made a horrible clicking/tappety sound and the smell of burning was there soon after. After 30 secs or so it stopped making the noise an the smell of burning went.

just spoke with the garage and the bloke informs me that the clutch has gone. bits of clutch all over the place. he was suggesting changing the hydraulic clutch bearing? is this neccessary?

In my day...... It was always cover plate and bearing replaced. (clutch kit)
