The Cabbie - Ph1

Project XIX - D53D

After viewing the forum's like normal. I spoted this in the Ebay section of Retro-Renault. With the tag someone buy it. So I started to watch the item, and talk to the chunk about maybe having it. but if we end up with it Project NEA will have to go in it's current condition. Anyhow I placed a small bid at first, Sat night just to get the ball rolling. Sunday came. and with it been on buy it now. I just kept play bidding till around £210. The chunk left me alone for a while. While tho' though was one my mind. well if it going. someone going to have to pay for it, so ended up in the end bidding £305. The rerevse was £300. And well no-one else bidded and ended up getting it for that. It was listed with a engine fault. i.e it was getting ready to die. But I got it back to base driving it. nice and steady. I was amamazed it last to 35 mile to get back here. Still now with it sat on the drive off the road not tax. Time to find out what the rattle was. First off was to whip off the rocker cover. to do a few check that Chris H as told me to do to find out, If I was lucky enough for it to be tappet's. Well it ended up no. Is the bottom end starting to show sign's it going. Well with that info known it time to look for a F7P engine for it. and get it fitted. Below is a wee report on the tsppet check's. etc

Right today got more time. the check the tappet. and spin the engine over manually via the crank bolt.

From pully side to flywheel

Exhaust Tappets

1. play
3. play
8. slight play

Innlet

1. slight play

Now when i say play i'm talk a few thou at the very most I can push them down with my thumb. slight play is like inbetween solid and play.

Also removed the plugs. in same order as above for the plug pics.

Plug No1

Plug no2

Plug no 3
plug3.JPG

And plug no 4
plug4.JPG

With the plugs out, and spining it over by hand. it was getting tighter/free. So i'll take it, that the bottom end fucked. and getting ready to go. Also wee pic of the side of the lump.

Also there is some play in the steering. So I will end up taking it up to See Chris H to have this sorted. once the engine in and running fine. Plus he's get a go in the only type of 19 he's not driven yet. Well ok maybe. It is the H after all

[break=New Wheels]
Also I can't have it driving around on chav up rim's So the set of Ph1 R19 16V wheel I had knocking about when to go and have tyre's fitted. I've still got to more tyre's to remove off Project NEA. before all four of done. But I think it's looking better allrerady with a good set of renault rim's on.

23th June 2007

I've now got all four R19 16V Ph1 wheels with rubber on, at a total cost of £25 with new valve and balancing. With Toyo T1-R's wrapped around the wheels. I'm still waiting on a engine. But Heal on Retro-Renault as one allmost ready for me And Hopefully I should be picking that up on the 30th June. The dent that on on the boot oanell will push out with Dent wizard. so getting that sorted when I get round to it. Tbh not relly done anything, but gave the inside's of the spare wheel a new coat of paint. to help keep the rust at bay on those steel wheel's.

Starting to look the part now with the wheel on, once the engine sorted and FCS out of the way. I'll be looking into having a new set of rear arch's brassed in. and then painted.

[break=Engine out time.]

Right I've found a replacement engine. half way tho' fitting it at Mick Pm's house. Big thank's for the use of your Pad BTW. Also Thank's to Neal, and Simon. for the engine. and in helping me to get it to mick house. But anyhow's Today mainly been taking the engine out. and swaping all the running gear over to the other engine. the block that came out. did have two core plug's gone. any not many pic's but here ya go.

[break=she running and on the road. project not finnish yet tho']

Well got to lazy update this project. But the engine in and running. It done it's first show FCS 2007.

Since then i had a better rad fitted. coolant sort of flushed again, about 80% water now. full oil and filter change. The speedo hooked back up. And the Hood as been chaged for a Second hand hood that got tear's on it But not cut, so it's keeping the rain out.

4/8/07

Timing belt service. Mick Pm as replaced the Timing belt and pully's for me today. the Engine running well. and getting better the more it's ran. Still got a wheel bearing to sort. and a set of worn disc. to swap.

[break=Time for it to be the current work Bus]

21/9/07

Since the last update, done a few small thing's. first was to change the disc's pad's on the front for new item. It now stop's a lot better. the broken wiper motor been swaped for a second hand unit ( Cheer's T.I.B ) . Fitting some thrust washers in the hood to stop the rattle ( it was getting on my tit's ). I've also fitted a front wheel bearing. Now during fitting i'll I was just playing with it I pulled the inner race one one side out. It was shoved back in right away. And with how the drive shaft fit's. It should pull it all back in, Now there still a whine that rise's with road speed. It it the bearing I don't know. but it feel better on the road, and there a lot less runout play. One thing to keep a eye on.

This is now my current daily driver, due to one of our car biting the oppps I've crashed bullet. Now how anyone drive around in Cab's all the time must need there head looking at. Not that there a prob. it just the wind noise and traffic, you can hear with the lack of a metal roof. I've also borrowed a set of 16" Dinard wheels from a Ph1 megane coupe. for the daily running, As I can't be arsed cleaning the Ph1 wheel's all the time.

Well, now it time to rest the old girl. I've got a driving ban. and well M.O.T due soon, done a ball-joint on it. Fitted some crap 15" wheels with brand new rubber on. So we see how it goes on M.O.T, I think it may fail on steering colum as there is a little play. and well the normal hand brake effort issue. so if all ok, after the M.O.T sorted. it should be in the body shop for bodywork, then a full re-paint. and I'm asking for a extra 2-3 coat of clear to be added. After that, Re- under seal the floor, As there is issue's down the middle. I.e The exhaust area. and well then fix the cabbie hood. so in a nut -shell dry storeage time really.

Update on the Above It fail test on the handbrake. So fitted new disc and pad. To be on the safe side. And then only just failed again. was 15% effort. It all most made 16%. On the old M.O.T system it was a pass, however on the new Computer system, Well it said No. For the past two weeks I've been trying to get my hand on a pair of New handbrake cable's from Reno. With no luck. At time's I think I may have got my hands on a Renault Alpine, and not a 19 Valver geting hold of parts. Still it will not pass untill this work as been done, as the handbrake adjustment, been wound into the Max :x . Which if i'm right is wrong, and show the Cable are ready for changing. Still happy with it at the mo, and The Engine a Good un' also. Did well on the test. So now it come to the time, to sort this M.O.T then after that get the rust sorted. painted etc. As Hopefully, it will be going into a hired Garage soon.

Update - Well the Plan on the Garage I.e My old man's Garage might have failed. due to space. however I'm working on it. I'll make it fit somehow.

[break=New 2nd hand Bonnet]

After seeing a 449 Ph1 Cabbie breaking near me. I sent my bro to check the car out. for part's. All tho the pic's on E-Bay showed that the leather was in good nick It turn's out the car was a real shitter. However the Bonnet was in good nick with no Vent rust. and a good front lip. It had had something on the bonnet in it's life, And had laquer peel. But I plan on having the whole car re-painted at some time. So a good stright panel is what i'm after. ( the right short panel for a cabbie may I add ). Pic's

My next plan of Action is to get it into my old man's Garage now he's moved in. And that I've seen how wide it is, and I know I can get the cabbie in there. Just got to buy him beer's to prove that My cabbie should be in there and not the Harley Davidson he planned on buying.. :mrgreen:

[break=Sold to a new Retro-Renault owner]

Due to the old man not allow the use of his Garage and it been left outside, for two years with a leaky hood. The condensation had build up in the car. and IMO caused the boot floor to start rotting out. due to me not been able to drive, and other life issue's. I had to sell the car before it got to bad. So with the car listed. I had a wee vists from ben.

Money was then handed over a week later and the car went off to it's new home. It's new project can be found here.

Why do you need handbrake cables from Renault? Just get them fro Eurocarparts or GSF, or even your local factors.

Well, two week chunk went there for rear disc's. none in stock, and there said due to the 19 been a rare motor, there don't stock part's. Chunk went BTW not me as I can't drive.

Discs aside, I heard the meg handbrake lever attachments (at the brakes) were longer than on the 19 therefore more leverage.

Well At the mo it's parked up going No-where. got Banned so can't use it. Cancelled insuance while I was in the nick,only to find out I coud have left it Insured. and in use. as I had to pay full price,for the claim last month. For now. I greased up the rusty area's. and it get coveredup in winter.
