Terrible Idle

Right i have a rover 400 1996 :( (but i also still have my white 19 ;))

i've just done the head gasket on it along with the cambelt, waterpump and thermostat, flushed the engine and put new oil and oil filter in.

When the auto choke turns off and it settles down to about 1k the revs bounce all over the place like from 0.3 to 1.5 it's a proper chug chug, the timing was out on the crankshaft pulley by nearly 45 degrees but that has been corrected and the problem is still there. also when i accelerate to about 3k and take my foot off the pedal it sticks there but slowly comes down.

any ideas on what it could be?

ps i'm still selling my white 19, it's up for £200 (see the link in my sig for why i'm asking for £200) i will take offers as i want it to goto a decent home.

yes its the start of things to come with it.

Anyway what engine is it exactly? does it have coilpacks or is the last of the dizzy ones?

if a dizzy one are the leads on right?

It's a 1.4 k series and it has a dizzy and they are on right as the leads were never disconnected from he cap and the leads are only just long enough to go on each plug.

Would a video of it running help at all?

could be a million things, head cracked, did you get it skimmed and pressure tested? Plugs ok? Injectors?

Well a million things has been reduced to a few things across two websites and numerous calls to friends and mobile mechanics, i have a leak on the inlet manifold or the throttle butterfly is warped as some are plastic or the idle control valve.

So i took the inlet manifold off tonight, cleaned it up some more etc, applied that red stuff gasket sealant and put it back together, whilst doing this i noticed there was a pipe disconnected from the ecu which leads to the top of the injectors, i don't remember ever unplugging it, so it was put back in, car still ran like shit even after resetting the idle with a reset sequence. so i gave up and went back into my mums.

Decided to leave to go home about 15 mins later and the car is running fine.

I have no idea now if it was the inlet manifold gasket or that pipe, but right now the car is running fine, only time will tell....

cheers chris for your help :)

the tb will have been done by now, most got replaced as they limited the power by not letting it open fully on them. sad yet interesting fact.

the pipe will have done it, sorted it I mean
