Swerving...

Have just had my new tyres fited on Saturday and drove back up to London last night from Devon. The car didn't feel right, at high speeds and also braking from higher speeds. It felt like the back was not connected to the the car and that it was moving sideways. I don't know how best to describe it, it wasn't sliding or anything like that but I could feel it moving and i was having to correct with the steering. It just felt like the back was moving away.

Any ideas or what i need to get done to correct this as wouldn't mind getting all sorted this weekend. Is it tracking, alignment, geometry? Also, tyres on the back are Toyo's T1R and on the front are original Michelins - would this make any difference?

Any info, advice etc much appreciated as it's a bit worrying and wasn't the most enjoyable drive, especially as i've been looking forward to some serious driving with the new tyres on!

Thanks.

Did you check the pressures are correct to what you told them to put in?

Not a great fan of mixing tyres, but perhaps they might just need scrubbing in?

With regards to scrubbing in, the guy said should only take about 10-15 miles. I drove back 200 odd last night so don't think it's that. I'll check pressures as they might be over done.

I am right in thinking that it should be 2.1 for the rears? That is what it should be for the Michelins, will it be the same for the Toyo's?

Is a Mk 2 - the betetr one [smilie=hide.gif]

Am going to get the tracking checked this weekend and also check tyre pressures. Has anyone used Kwik Fit? I know they are probably crap and i'll get slated but there is one 2 minutes round the corner from me so might be easier to pop round there on Saturday morning to get it done.

I just don't get it cause before tyres were changed there were absolutley no issues with the rear end or how the car felt so why suddenly now with the new wheels put on.

What are the correct alignment settings for front and rear - toe / camber please?

I suspect maybe they had to "yank" your wheels off the rear as sometimes they seize. In doing so they may have altered your tracking. The symptons you have are a classic sign of the rears having "toe out" settings. The car will drive fine under acceleration, but as soon as you lift off and/or brake the back starts to wander. It may be that the settings were already out and the old worn tyres had nulled the effect..........

have exactly this same problem since having a new gearbox fitted recently! is almost exactly as yourself and TRW1 described it there, and when turning round corners, was like the rear wheels were turning independantly to the front...oversteery but not slidding or skidding.

hope you dont mind me jumping in here with a question, but should renault perform a geometery/alignment check after doing this work, or would they send it out to be done?

i ask because i have found it very difficult to have a full proper geometry/alignment check done. The place my dealers would use (in there complex) do not have the settings, and other places ive tried only have the settings for the mk1, when i presented the mk2 manual settings, im being told basically they can offer no guarantee that my tyres wont be shredded to bits

This is exactly what I was thinking last night as spent ages trawling the old posts on here about similar stuff and it had been mentioned a couple of times in connection with the tyres being yanked off pretty hard. The guy did have to do this, especially on the drivers side rear, took him about 10 minutes of serious yanking. It is also exactly as TRW1 said - fine under acceleration, but lift off and braking and she's all over the shop.

Am just glad that seem to be getting somewhere on the symptons on this. So it's a case of getting the tracking and geoometry done?

What are the settigns for a Mk 2 and any recommendations of where I should go fo rthis. People have mentioned Demon Tweeks but Wrexham is a bit far. Am in London and don't mind travelling for 1 1/2 hrs or so to go somewhere decent.

Thanks.
