Strange noise

OK sombody will slap me in the face for this.

I have a strange noise almost like a Gurgling/water gushing noise, only happens at 1.5k to 2k revs...

very noticable with the engine cover off (the top cover not the sealed one)

Its driving fine, coolant level ok, although i did have to topp that up about a week ago as i was just below minimum.

Also just while iam at it, say your in the incorrect gear say and pulling away or what ever is it normal to hear the gear box working hard. Meaning sounds like gears on a mountain bike, its hard to explain.

thanks team

Hi Jon,

With regards cooling may be worth following the bleed procedure in the manual - if you haven't already. There are also bleed points on the top of the radiator and also on one of the heater hoses under the plastic tray in the front bonnet area. Essentially you bleed the system using the bleed points then run the engine with the coolant filler top off until the thermostat opens and the front fans come on, this then purges any air. You can then top up the coolant to max and put the top back on.

Gearbox ... I kind of think I may know the bike gear noises you refer. Could it be pinking ? Mine was pinking a bit yesterday and it is more noticeable with engine covers off. Happens more on a hot day or when your labouring the engine in too high a gear. Try using higher octane fuel for a bit but it is faily common on cars in those circmstances - if that is what it is .

Thanks martin.. ile get on with bleeding it properly.

Pinking from being in the incorrect gear, lack of fuel? it does sound more like the gears working but in a loose fashion.

Ive had renault 5 gt turbo pinking, not that kinda noise. Really sound like the gear box kinda grinding but not in a bad way.... hmmm might change the gearbox oil

Well I thought you might have been describing the 'tinkling' noise you get when labouring the engine in the wrong gear usually after changing and depressing the throttle etc etc. Maybe not that then ...

When changing gears and taking up drive the gearbox can sound a bit loose, could be partly due to engine mountings - mine makes various transmission noises and whines which seem normal ... More noticeable with engine covers off for sure ...

Hi Steve,

Have you replaced transmission fluid recently ? It may be worth doing so as it can improve the smoothness of gear-changes ...
