Strange noise from rear?

Acquired my Mk2 with 1500mls on the clock. It's now up to 4000mls. Any thoughts from the technical gurus on the strange graunching noise that occasionally comes from the back end (possibly offside?). It only occurs when the car is warm after being driven and has remained standing for some time. Then when I set off the noise kicks in for around 10 seconds, then disappears. It doesn't happen all the time (and never when the car is cold), which makes it very difficult to diagnose. It feels as if something is rubbing or grating somewhere, but I can't be sure.

Might be the exhaust has expanded and dragging on the bumper?

Could be the anti squel shim in the back brakes.

Have you touched them recently ?
