i had to do a monster emergancy stop last night (another car ran a red light) and 10 or so minutes later i saw the stop light and handbrake flicker 3-4 times. it hasnt done it today yet, but after reading the above i wanna have a look at the brake fluid level.

any guides for a non mechanically minded person on how to top it up?

I'd start off by checking the level first which is dead simply to do. Open the bonnet and the brake fluid reservoir is at the back right top, clearly visible with the black "boot" liner still in situ. It's got an obvious MIN / MAX marked on it and the level should ideally fall nearer the max ;-).

If it's beneath the min then I'm fairly certain any standard DOT 4 fluid will do to top it up, but I'll leave it to one of the more hands on mechanical members to confirm.

DOT 4 from any motor factors or Halfords will be fine. However, as others have said, check your pads; there's a reason why the fluid has got low which is most likely pad wear.
