I am trying to find out if anybody has increased there steering lock by reducing the size nylon spacers in the steering rack.

I found a post fom harry about but it was all a bit vague, so more detiled info would be good, i am thinking if I increase the the front and rear track with spacers i could get even more lock on the front.

cheers

Hi,
If you increase the steering lock you will need to have narrower wheels - expensive to have them specially made unless you go for split rims which would also be very expensive. If it was right for the dynamics of the car the steering lock would have been more than it is.

My understanding is that if you remove the spacers, you need to remove the inner arch liners to gain the few mm of extra clearance required.

I gues it's all a question of how much extra lock/steering angle you get before contemplating more extreme measures such as norrower wheels, altering track etc. I think the spacer mod was just squeezing the most out of the stock setup.

Has anyone measured the clearance at full lock and seen where the precise pinch points are ?

This is the link i was refering too

Don't know if anybody is aware of this, but the Clio V6 has, as Clarckson mentioned a bigger turningcircle than an oiltanker.

Whell, I've got good news for the RS2 (phase2) drivers.

The RS2 has a wider track on the front, but still the same steeringrack of the RS1. This steeringrack has also been taken from another standard productioncar, which one I don't remember.
On the RS1 they needed to limit the steeringangle, and did this with two plastic shimms.

On the RS2 you can safely take of 4.5 mm of these plastic shimms.
This dramatically increases your steering angle, hence more important the driftangle beyond which you are just a passenger in your car.

If you lowered your car, which I would advice against anyway, because the standard suspension is too short to start with, you might get in trouble with the Xenon headlightunits.

You might have trouble removing the fastener below the ABS unit, but you can use a pipe which fits over, drill a hole int it, weld a nut on it, and next clamp it with a short bolt. With this you can loosen it from the outside through the wheelarch.

And to add to the other post if you use wheel spacers on the front say 6mm then you will have more room for extra lock in the arches as a result.

But Harrys say on a Phase 2 we already have more for more lock even without wheel spacers
