Starting noise

Hi, every time i start my mk1 v6 there is a clonking noise coming from the engine area. i think the noise comes from something rotating as there is a precise time difference between each noise. i can't here the noise when i drive but i think that is because the engine is so loud!
The noise only appeared after it had it 36K service.
Any ideas?

Does it happen only when the stater motor is turning - i.e. before the engine has fired into life?

If so, it could be the battery failing, as I had that on mine. the clonking is the starter motor itself momentarily stopping & starting as it fails to draw enough current from the battery.
